A few more men are applying to be taken back every day, but when the work will be actively resumed I will not undertake to say. I will say, however, that no interference by any outside parties, 110 matter how highly we may esteem the parties themselves, will have any effect. The matter at issue can only be settled between the operators and the miners. Davles, St. Joseph,-Mo., Aug. 27.—The beef trust Inquiry against the St. Joseph packers has been commenced before Special Commissioner Klnley of Kansas City. John Wood, a local butcher, was placed on direct examination, after which court was adjourned. Attorney General Crow conducted the ouster proceedings. Witness Wood testified that he had bought beef for twenty years of the packers, but not until two years ago had he been confronted with a uniform price schedule. He had been placed on the C. O. D. list by all the packers and admitted he was "sore." Ills entire evidence was objected to as being incompetent and presumptious. Rochester, N. Y„ Aug. 27 —A special dispatch to the Democrat and Chronicle from Watklns says that ex-Governor George Iloadly of Ohio has died at that place, aged seventy-six years. He and his family had been at Watklns for several weeks. The remains will IkD taken to Cincinnati for interment. Davles, St. Joseph,-Mo., Aug. 27.—The beef trust Inquiry against the St. Joseph packers has been commenced before Special Commissioner Klnley of Kansas City. John Wood, a local butcher, was placed on direct examination, after which court was adjourned. Attorney General Crow conducted the ouster proceedings. Witness Wood testified that he had bought beef for twenty years of the packers, but not until two years ago had he been confronted with a uniform price schedule. He had been placed on the C. O. D. list by all the packers and admitted he was "sore." Ills entire evidence was objected to as being incompetent and presumptious.
