This makes it certain that there will be no national strik" of miners. Nicholls's district is one of the live that signed a call for the na tional convention to consider the question of striking. President Mitchell's gavel fell at 10 o'clock this morning. The Ohio delegates held a caucus this morning and voted to support Mitchell's plan, with the understanding that the proposed defense fund should be used to support all the miners now on strike, bituminous as well as anthracite, and that the assessment be 10 per cent, of the wages instead of $1 per number weel;. ly. Plattsmouth, Neb., July IS.—As a result of a cloudburst last night the river swept four feet deep through the main street of the town, carrying with it everything movable. Half a dozen fratfllj, buildings collapsed. The electric liiiht plant was rendered useless and the town was in darkness. They went out at once on the steamer Merriconeag, which made a special trip to this city for them. They arrived back at the island about 10 o'clock, when Coroner Shapleigh viewed the bodies and decided that an inquest was unnecessary as the drowning was accidental. President Mitchell's address before the miners' convention in which he made the above recommendations practically settled the question of declaring a general strike in the negative. Indeed, his proposition would have keen accepted yesterday afternoon and the convention's work ended had not tlie anthracite delegates requested an adjournment till today that they might caucus on the question and decide us to their vote. The convention met at 10 o'clock, there hclng 2,184 votes represented by delegated or proxies. Of this number the anthracite strikers had 7i»8. The preliminaries were soon over, and the convention took a recess till afternoon, .when President Mitchell made his address. He said: Skipper Fred Miles, who was in charge of the boat, has been employed at the islands for years and has always been considered thoroughly reliable and trustworthy. He is severely criticised, however, for taking out a party of seventeen in a nineteen foot boat, which is said to be In violation of the regulations of the islands. Plattsmouth, Neb., July IS.—As a result of a cloudburst last night the river swept four feet deep through the main street of the town, carrying with it everything movable. Half a dozen fratfllj, buildings collapsed. The electric liiiht plant was rendered useless and the town was in darkness.
