The Republican State Convention to nominate a candidate for Judge of the Supremo Court of tho Stale of Pennsylvania, met at the Court ITouse in this city, on Wednesday last,20th inst. The delegations from the several counties of the commonwealth, were nearly all full, and a large number of outsiders were in attendance to advocate the claims of the several candidates.— The delegates were called to order at 10 o'clock, by Hen. Frank Jordon, chairman of the State Central Committee, who on discharging that doty took occasion to surrender his position, which expired on the organisation of the convention, in a. brief, but most elequent speech which was received with repeated out-bbrsts of applause. The roll was called, when the following list of delegates answered to their names : P O RE S T HOUSE, (GEO.W. BRAINERD, ■I DAVID BELDEN ( ELISHA W, BAXTER. BANKS, Corner Wyoming Avenuo and Spruce Bt., INSURANCE COMPANIES, Resolved, That this Convention, speaking for the Republicans of Pennsylvania, unreservedly endorse the reconstruction measures of the Thirty-Ninth and Fortieth Congresses, as based upon sound prinoiples, essentially iustand wise and promising an early, legal, and permanent restoration ol the United States to their share in the Government of the Union. That we denounce and contemn the efforts of President Johnson, throngh his pliant Attorney General and a majority of his Cabinet, to evade those laws by interfering to obstruct and prevent their enforcement, and in the spirit in which they were enacted; and that we call upon Congress soon to meet and promptly and decisively to dispose of this new nullification. Resolved, That the thanks of the loyal men of this Commonwealth are hereby tendered to Major General Sheridan and Major Gen. Sickles for their publicly declared unwillingness to be made instrumental, in the startling and terrific words of the former, in opening under Presidential dictation, "a broad and macadamized way for perjury and fraud to travel on," in pursuit of the coveted repossession of political power in the Rebel States ; and that this Convention confidently expect that General Grant will vindicate his past record by cordially sustaining them in their patriotic efforts to execute the law. Resolved, That President Johnson further merits our condemnation for his reckless pardon and attempted restoration to political rights of many of tho chief conspirators against the Union ; and that, especially, his persistant efforts to compel the release of Jefferson Davis, without question for his crimes, were a reproach to the administration of justice and an insult to the whole loyal people of the Nation. Resolved, That, warned by past misfortune, we ask that the Supreme Court of the Stato be placed in harmony with the political opinions of the majority of the people, to the end that tho Court may never again, by uqiust dicision, seek to set aside laws vital to the Nation, nor imperil the safety of the public securities, nor impair operation of the Bounty, Pension and Tax laws, which were required for the public defense, nor in any way thwart the measures whioh were deemed essential to public protection ; bnt that on the other hand it may become apd remain a fit and faithful interpreter of tfi& liberal spirit of the age, a bulwark of public faith, and an impartial and fearless exponent of the equal rights of man. Resolved, That the gratitude of the people to the soldiers and sailors, whose bravery met and overthrew the slaveholders' rebellion, should have repeated and emphatic expression, and that we heartily disapprove and oontemn the course of tho Secretary of the Treasury in postponing and ignoring the just claims of our bravo defenders upon the bounty of the Government awarded to them by the National Congress.Resolved, That in the Hon. V Mr. Editor, are you sportsman enough to tell me the definition of "dead beat?" Last Satururday night, qp my way to Canton, I found myself seated in front of a braee of dressed, but rather suspicious looking chaps, who seemed familiar with the term, at least, if not its meaning . One of them, addressing his partner, said, "Bill, the papers say that them dead beats in Congress are going to 'peach Andy Johnson ; do you think think they'll do it?" Bill replied, can't tell, 'praps they will; the d—abolitionists 'peached Andrew Jackson once, ud its just.like 'em to 'peach Johnson." " Well, Bill, replied the other "they'll have a nice old time if they do, bet yer life; Andy ain't no deadbeat ye know, and if they do 'peach him itll make fightin'; the South '11 fight for him aud the Democrats '11 fight for him. I'll fight for him if I'm in the grates; I was in Canada during the war, but I used my influence there 1 against the d d abolitionists, and wiH do, it if we have another war, and my bis' calls me away from the States; I ain't no dead beat ye know. This interchange of thought was cut short by tho car whistle, as the train approached a station, and the next moment, when the conductor sung out "Antwerp," the two men were apparently asleep. msuRANCK CO., LIVERY IN PITTSTON! Mr. Manders, who travels with the menagerie himself, retired to rest about two o'clock on Sunday morning, having previously made a personal inspection of the Caravans, finding everything apparently right and secure. The watchman was sitting smoking a pipe at the side of a large coke fire in the centre of the enclosure, about half past five o'clock, when ho suddenly found himself pinioned from behind. He tried in vain to free himself, and at last he shouted lustily for help. Mr. Manders, hearing the outcry of the watchman, and also the furious bark- , ing of two large mastiff dogs, opened a side window of the carriage in which he lived, and was startled'to see the watchman in the grip of one of the large gorillas he had recently added to the menagerie. When the gorilla noticed the approach of Manders it released the watchman, who was luckily considerably more frightened than hurt, and it at once sprang up one of the poles and on to the tilts of the menagerie. An inspection was immediately made of the caravan in which the three gorillas had been left perfectly safe the previous evening, and Manders was horror struck to find that the animals had positively torn up the flooring of the caravan and had all three made their escape. It was then discovered that the trio were seated comfortably on the top ridge of the canvas roof, evidently holding high council as to their future proceedings. g E M O V 4 L ! BRADFORD CO. In England efforts are being made to introduce compressed blasting cotton as an explosive agent. Its great advantage over gunpowder appears to be the small space it occupies ; bat even in this, not to speak of its power, ire think it will not equal nitrogin. That compound, of which we have frequently spoken favorably—the Journal of Mining being the first scientific paper in America to advocate its use—has been daily incressicg in public favor. The popular clamor which was at first raised agaiust it has ceased. It has been shown to be at least not more dangerous than gunpowder, if proper, precautions are taken by those using it. Its effectiveness i« highly appreciated. We learn from the Californian paper that it is extensively used in the operations on the Central Pacific Railroad. At Keedysvill, Md., the Baltimore and Ohio Railaoad Company are removing two cuts with it. The recent experiments at Coal hill tunnel, near Pittsburgh, have further demonstrated its great economy and rapidity of operation. We imagine that the experiments now made in the coal mines ot Pennsylvania will be as satisfactory as those made at Oswogo where it blasted out twelve hundred yards of stone from the bed of the river nine days.—American Journal of Mining. tfS, Full information, with tho "highest testimonials also a Book on Special Diseases, in a sealed envelope, sent free. This was much more easily arranged than carried out. A long ladder was procured, and one of the keepers, with a heavy riding whip, ascended to the roof of the menagerie, but from the threatening attitude assumed by tie gorillas on noticing his approach Manders ordered the man to descend again. A gun, loaded with blank cartridge, was then fired at the animals, and this had the effect of dislodging them from their elevated position.— The gorilias, with a horrid yell, sprang from the ridge, ran along the roofs of the caravans, ami jumping from off the elephant wagon, immediately proceeded at a rapid swing trot along the Derby road. As soon as the gun was firod,as previously mentioned, and the gorillas had made their downward movement, a perfect panic seized the bystandors, and away went the crowd in all directions. Mr. Manders, mounting his pony, at once proceeded at a gallop along the Derby rotfd, instructing some of the keepers to fallow on horseback, Mr. M., after a sharp span of about a mile or two, came up with the hindmost of the gorillas, who wore proceeding along the highway in Indian file. Riding alongside the animal, which displayed its molars in a threatening manner, Manders administered a crushing blow with large bar of iron gas tubing across its loins, causing it to drop instantly. Having some coils, of rope attached to his saddle bow, Manders dismounted, and, with the assistance of some of the keepers, who had arrived at the scene of action, gorilla No. 1 was ; effectually secured and placed in an adjoining stable for safety* while the chase was resumed.
