Although we hoar comparatively little nowadays, of sudden accessions to wealth bv needy farmers, owing to oil discoveries on their farms, such as were common in the height of the oil excitement, new developments are continually making in the oil regions of Pennsylvania, ana incidents occasionally occur which are as remarkable as any of those which created so much comment a few year.- ago. New oil territory is constantly added to the productive districts, and many vicissitudes continue to mark the fortunes of those engaged in its development. The litusville Herald tells a story of a well lately bored on a farm which had been considered outside the bounds of oil territory. The experiment was described by the experienced oil men of that region, as "the wildest kind of wildcatting7' But the men who had eliarg* of the undertaking bored on with undiminished confidence until, on comparing its depth with other wells, the surveyoi pronounced it already too dD ep, and the old experienced driller who superintended the job declared there was no use in boring any deeper. Theranpon the proprietors sold oijt the well as "a dry hole " to a party of operators who bad a theory, and were willing to pay some thing for an opportunity of testing it. The well and thirty acres of land were bought at five o'clock in the afternoon, operations were immediately resumed, and the new owners proved -the correct uess of their theory by striking oil at eight o'clock on the same day. Before the tubing could be put in 700 barrelflowed. In a very short time the news had unaccountably spread, and the fields around the well were tilled with an eager, excited crowd of men, while horsemen scoured the surrounding country calling the stupefied farmers from their beds, and paying them sums for their farms that they bad nevei dreamed of possessing. Since this event the farmers in that region have become demoralized, and think nothing of asking §100,000 for barren little farms, which, for agricultural purposes, would be dear at §1.000. The sewing-mr.chine man was punctual not only on the first day, but for many days After. Somehow it took a long time to teach Carrie—not that she was slow to learn. No. no. He, Sanderson, told her over and over again that she had learned more rapidly than any lady he had ever taught, and he had Been agent for the great S. M Co. for five years, and in that time he had travelled " some." Then Carrie said that he said that just to encourage her. He became earnest, and assured lier that he was incapable of untruth ; that in her pure presence falsehood would turn into truth as if struck by a fairy's magic wand. Mrs. Hall whr deep in her housekeeping duties, for "old Moffat" left her to find out if a woman could keep a hotel, knowing by experience that it isn't •very man who can, and she couldn't play watch-dog to Carrie; so the young people were left to themselves. There were so many things to learn. For at least a week Carrie sat with her amis folded, working the treadle with her feet. That was the ■ first thing to learn, Mr. Sanderson said. This gave them opportunity to convere. And if you had seen thein just eeperated by the machine, you would atmost have thought them Romeo and Juliet on the balcony, especially when Mrs. Hall like the old nurse, popped her head in at the door, which she did occasionally the first week or two just for the sake of appearances. Then again, so many accidents happened. If the wheel started well, which it seldom did, ihe work was wrong, or the tension, or the spool gave out, or the thread snapped, or the stuff puckeied, or the needle broke, or the stitches were so big you could lift 'em with a pitchfork, or ihe pes-ky thing '-rot so heavy it bad to be oiled, and then Carrie got the oil all over her dress or the work. Sometimes the "old" machine act#a just as if it had sense, and worked like a charm. Again it was as contrary as Mary whose garden wouldn't trrow. On such occasions the sewing-machine maa would unscrew the whole thing, and Carrie thousrht he never could get it together again ; but he did, and to show her that it was uninjured he stitched yards and yards just as quick as lightning, and worked her initials and his. and flowers, and quilled and hemmed, and embroidered and tuc'Ced, and gathered and ruffled, and felled aud frilled, and one day, as the crowning act of high art, he made — love! She sat there in a sort of stupor, hardly knowing what to say, or think, or do. Half im hour roust have elapeed when she heard the trampling of horses underneath the window, and peeping out, saw his team. The wagon he drove was of singular construction, being fitted Tip nt the back to hold sewing-machines. He had been stopping at her father's hotel, and it had not taken him long to make ready to leave. He sprang into the vchicle, flicked his whip upward in the direction of her window. and was off at full spe. d. v When he had gone she began to realize * the wounds invisible which love's keen arrows make. ' Day after day and week after week she hoped he would relent and write, but he did not; grief and pride had a fierce battle, and pride would have been worsted had Carrie known where to write. She would in her agony, have humbly owned her love, and entreated him to return to her The sweet poetess Mrs. Norton says that "the lightest heart makes sometimes heaviest mourning." Even so it was with metrv Carrie. Six months wore on, and new sorrows came to press aside the old. " Old man Moffat" died, and after the estate was settled Carrie found herself with only a few hundred dollars—her fortune all told. Mrs. Hall had saved something, and they determined to go to Chicago to seek employment, and to keep together as long as they could. It wr.s a disastrous time, for the great fire had already taken place, and impoverished almost the entire West. Nobody wanted housekeepers, for the reason that the Chicago people had then no houses to ke 'p. Carrie could get nothing to do. and couldn't have done anything if she had. Their money ran out. and" their hopes ran down. One day, when heart-sick, footsore, and weary, Mrs. Hall obtained a situation to go into Ohio. The pay would hardly support them both, she thought, as she plodded hack to where they lived to tell Carrie her good luck. Well they would get along fomehow. She found that she had been so deep in her meditations that she had stopped still in front of a fine building which the fire had spared. Glancing up to see where she had wandered in her abstraction, she saw an imposing sign with "Sanderson Brothers, Sewing-machines," on it. MAKING AND CHILDREN'S FURS.
