The most interesting spot on the island was the cave where Selkirk lived duriug his residence there—the Jerusalem of all devout believers in "Robinson Crusoe," and the spot which, more than any other, connects that wondefnl story with reality. It is situated near the shore of a bay, about a quarter of a mile to the West of the harbor, and we were compelled to go to it by water. A short walk brought us to the cave which is in full night from the sliore, only a field of wiM oats intervening. It is, perhaps, fifteen or twenty feet high, and as many deep, situated at the foot of a precipitous liill side, and surrounded by tinn clamps of a species of cane. It was somewhat of a disappointment to find that it did not correspond more closely to Robinsou's description of bis celebrated habitation, with its impregnable hedges, its second doorway of exit, its nooks for stowing bis powder and other valubles, and its numerous ingenious contrivances for the comfort and safety of its distinguished occupant. Its situation, however, agreed more nearly with the fiction, and the plain—"not above a hundred yards broad and twice as long"—which lay like a green before the door of Crusoe's cave, sheltered from the sun till toward its setting and "descending irregularly every way, down into the low ground by the seaside," might well have been that on which.we looked. The place had been desecrated by sac-religious relic hunters, who had carved their names over its walls and chipped away great pieces of its interior, and it was black with smoke from tlie tires of three Chilean families, who had recently inhabited it. These circumstances, however, did not dampen our ardor or lessen our enthusiasm, and, with the except ion of one skeptical member of the party, who, disappointed at not seeing more evident traces of Robinson Crusoe, refused to believe even in Alexander Selkirk, we all left, feeling that the day had been one never to be forgotten. My bewilderment lasted not long, however. 1 heard bells ringing withiu, many feet hurrying to and fro across the paved courtyard, the porle agained opened, a motion was made to me to enter, and banged instantly in the face of my driver, I followed my mute guide, who stopped every ten paces to prostrate himself upon the hard stones, to worship the great image of Christ-crucified, placed in relief on the front of the main building. On looking around the irregular courtyard I found it was lined with little workshops, in which, I afterwards learned, everything is made that is worn or used by the brothers of this strange order. It does not, it is true, adhere strictly to Selkirk's narrative; and, indeed. the story, as written by Defoe, would place its hero on an island in the Atlantic, not i'ar from the equator. Probably Tobago corresponds more closely than any other to the description given. It was, however, from Selkirk that Defoe first received the stimulus to undertake, and the ground work upon which to base the tale, which has made them both infinitely more famous than they would have been if Defoe had simply transcribed and published Selkirk's account. In irregular positions throughout the place were creatures in sombre vestments kneeling with their heads buried in books, or prostrated in tlie most abject positions on the cold floor. Most unexpectedly I came upon these monks, crouching close to the wall in dark places, like wild beasts in their lairs. When I caught glimpses of their faces I fancied I saw the worst type of the human countenance — where great lines of sorrow and crime, or both, were traced in indelible characters. Helpless, mute suffering—but not a word or sound —oh, it was terrible! There were but few quite young men amongst these ascetics, but let it be forever unwritten how youth could bury itself in this living grave ; and let it be forever unwritten, too, how age can drop into in unknown grave, unwept by a single tear, unsolaced by a single sigh of human sympathy ! Out into the broad garden, at the very chapel gate, I saw an open grave. I said to Hubert; Pittston, I)^c JOHN S. COSGROVE, dealer in j Groceries, Provisions, Flour, Feed, Pork Fish and Meats. DAVID PATTERSON, Prop Having recently made 1 stock of ■£e additions to his Sea Sickness.—There are scores of socalled remedies for sea sickness. Sometimes one is efficacious, sometimes another, and often none cf theui do any good. Still it is always well for those at sea to know how sea-sickness mCu/ he alleviated and possibly prevented. Sir James Alderson, in discussing this subject, says that it is not only necessary to take a recumbent position,' but also to lie in the right direction. A person lying down with the feet toward the bows of a 6hip is, while it descends in pitching, in the same position as a person in a swing descending forward, in which case we have seen that sickness is produced by blood being forced upon the brain. On the contrary, a person lying down with his head toward the bow is, during the descent of the ship, in the position of one descending backward in a swing, in which case the pressure by the blood will be toward the feet, and therefore relief, rather than an inconvenience, will be experienced, the tendency being to reduce the natural supply of blood to the brain. It is necessary not only to lie down, but to do so with the head to the bows, and it is highly desirable that this position should be assumed before the ship begins to move. There is a secondary advantage to be gained by closing the eyes, and so shutting out the confusion arising from the movement of the surrounding objects. TEAM ENGINES, BOILERS, CRACKERS, The undersigned baring purchased of Tliomss Waddell the Qtrong Steam Mill, and assumed the business of paid establishment. he would respectfully give notice that he will be at all times prepared to The scurvy was making frightful havoc among them, but the fresh food and mild climate of the island restored them all to health, and they went away to sing its praise. In 1751 a Spanish settlement was started there, but was soon destroyed by the great earthquake, and for a number of years subsequently the island was only trausiently and irregularly inhabited. In 1819 a penal colony was established there by the Chilean government, but the prisoners growing too numerous rose on the troops and overpowered them. The expense of maintaining a military force strong enough to quell such insurrections was found to be so great that the island was again abandoned to solitude. In 1819 a penal colony was established there by the Chilean government, but the prisoners growing too numerous rose on the troops and overpowered them. The expense of maintaining a military force strong enough to quell such insurrections was found to be so great that the island was again abandoned to solitude.
