June 10.—The Elkin and Quay leaders are still confident In their respective positions in the fight for the nomination for governor, but the Quay men seem more certain of their ground. Attorney General Elkin, however, does not believe that tho Quay managers understand the real conditions. His friends assure him that the figures heretofore given out are accurate and that there has been no loss from the original estimate. Thirty of the Allegheny delegation held a caucus this morning and decided to support Elkin. Bramwcll, W. Va., June 10.—Tho strike of miners In the Pocahontas and Flat Top fields is almost complete. Six of the Allegheny delegation were absent from the caucus. These are controlled by George VonVonhorst. and they will vote lor Pennypackcr. Y., June 10.—This was the first day of the centennial celebration of the United States Military Academy. This morning, tile four class es of cadets competed in athletic contests on the parade grounds. Tonight the graduation ball will be held In Memorial hall. The winners in the atlr lctic events were: 100 yard dash, Hammond; putting the shot, Bunker; pole vault, tic between Wilson and Sillon; 220-yard dash, Haminond; running high jump, tie between Carrithers and Anderson; 440-yard daftit Stillwell; 120-yard hurdles. No action will be taken on the gubernatorial nomination at this caucus. Senators Quay and Penrose both said this morning that Judge Pennypackcrwould be nominated for governor by a substantial majority. It has been a good-natured contest up to this time, many of the leader* exchanging visits. The city Is filling lip with large delegations from all parts of the State, including many bands and clubs: There will be street parades tonight and a great display of lireworks in the Interest of Elkin. Congressman Sibley is here and will be permanent chairman of the conven tlon in the event of Quay controlling that body. The fire originated in the basement of the building and spread rapidly to the upper stories through the elevator shaft. The blaze was discovered by James Newell, a grocer, who was driving through the alley in the rear of the building. Ifi- noticed smoke coming from one of the basement windows and ran Into the engine room to discover its cause. Behind the boilers, in the center of the cellar, and within a few feet of the elevator shaft he saw a small flame. The next instant the flames were caught by the draft in the elevator shaft and carried upward with BASEBALL. The delegates from Lawrence and Mercer held a caucus last evening and declared for ex-Senator Brown, of Lawrence, for lieutenant governor. The Watres forces and those of Mayor Lewis, of Lehigh, this morning entered Into a combine by which the Lehigh delegation of five will vote for Watres for governor, in return for which the Watres people will vote for Lewis for lieutenant governor. Tills gives Watres five more delegates over his claim of 11 yesterday, or 30 In all. If these all stand like a stone wall and do not ) break. It Is certain that Colonel Watres controls the situation. The $2,000 bet that Pennypackcr will not win, made in the lobby of the Lochicl hotel yesk terday, was called off today. Mr. Wei- I bel, who wagered that Pennypackcr I would not be' nominated, offered the I $50 forfeit to Captain J. Clayton Erb, who is a staunch Pennypackcr man. The St. Luke's society, which lias no connection or affiliation with SI. The blaze was discovered by James Newell, a grocer, who was driving through the alley in the rear of the building.
