THE POLICE MAKE ARRESTS Washington, June 6.—In the contlntinnce of the debate in the senate on the luteroceanic canal bill Mr. Hannn (O.) spoke in favor of the Spooner amendment conferring on the president authority to purchase the rights of the Panama Canal company If a valid title could be obtained; otherwise he shall decide upon the Nicaragua route. The Panama route he considered much to be preferred to the Nicaragua route, as it provided an interoceanic waterway much shorter and one that could be traversed at less expense than the Nicaragua route. June 6—Hotels and public buildings all over the city are being decorated for the Republican State convention, which will be held in the Grand Opera House next Wednesday, for the nomination of candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, and secretary of Internal affairs. Headquarters have already been opened by the Pen nypackcr and Elkin managers. Col. Watres is cxpected on Monday. Pennypacker's interests are in charge of Senators Quay and Penrose and Insurance Commissioner Durham. General Elkin will direct his own campaign, with the aid of Secretary of the Commonwealth Grlcst and other members of the State administration. All of the leaders and many of the delegates arc I expected to be on hand by Monday. The Elkinites are to be quartered at the Lochiel hotel. Judge Pennypack er's friends will caucus in the Board of Trade rooms, and the Philadelphia delegation will be at the Common wealth hotel. W. R. Andrews, secretary of the State committee, arrived today to take charge of the preliminary work of the convention. The State committee will meet on, Tuesday to make up the roll of delegates and select the temporary offlters. Elkin's managers have arranged to bring !D00 miners here from the Lykens Valley to shout for him. Elkin speaks at Somerset this evening and is cxpected to return to this city tomorrow. One of the latest accessions to the Elkin supporters is Major General Charles Miller, ol Kranklin, who is expected to bring with him the support of the three delegates from, his home county of Venango. Whereas General Miles went through here the day before attended by several other members of a board convened to observe long range gun tests at Fort Kiley, to lie so engaged for several days, he came back entirely alone and in such haste that he had not even reserved a sleeping car berth. An Investigation placed the blame for the shooting 011 four coal and iron pdlicemen who were located near the place where the shooting occurred. They were taken from the colliery by a circuitous route and landed in the lockup at midnight. The men say boys were tearing down the fence and that they shot into the air to scare them and did not know that any one had been injured until 'told of it later. Three of the men tired one shot each, and one fired two. They also claim that some one on the outside tired at them. There were fourteen policemen 011 the inside of the works. Each had a .1JS caliber revolver, and besides there were Ave Winchesters ready for use. Pretoria, June 0.—The executive council met here yesterday to con slder matters of detail for the carrying out of the general terms of surrender. No difficulties were encountered. A great thanksgiving service has been arranged for Sunday. Restrictions 011 .night trains have been removed, and Philadelphia, June 6.—Republican county. Congressional and Senatorial conventions were held In this county yesterday. The Congressional nominees are as follows: First district, H. H. Bingham; Second, Robert Adams, Jr.; Third, Henry Burk; Fourth. Robert H. Foerderer; Fifth. Edward Mor rell; Sixth. George JD. MacCrcary. All are renoniinations, except Mr. Mac- Crcary, who is the candidate In the new district created under the new ap portionment. June It.—Confirmatory particulars have readied here of sensational gold strikes reported ill' the I'icacho Blanco country, north of Castle creek. The main tilid was in the Exposition group. At a depth of forty feet a great liod.v of ore tilled with wire nuggets and tiake ore was struck. Some of the ore assayed here yesterday showed to the ton, while none of the samples showed less than $HNt to the toll. A series of other strikes followed, and on the Joe Dandy claims, in the Trlllty group, another tind, little less in richness than that of the Exposition strike, was made. The Panama route he considered much to be preferred to the Nicaragua route, as it provided an interoceanic waterway much shorter and one that could be traversed at less expense than the Nicaragua route. June 6—Hotels and public buildings all over the city are being decorated for the Republican State convention, which will be held in the Grand Opera House next Wednesday, for the nomination of candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, and secretary of Internal affairs. Headquarters have already been opened by the Pen nypackcr and Elkin managers. Col. Watres is cxpected on Monday. Pennypacker's interests are in charge of Senators Quay and Penrose and Insurance Commissioner Durham. General Elkin will direct his own campaign, with the aid of Secretary of the Commonwealth Grlcst and other members of the State administration. All of the leaders and many of the delegates arc I expected to be on hand by Monday. The Elkinites are to be quartered at the Lochiel hotel. Judge Pennypack er's friends will caucus in the Board of Trade rooms, and the Philadelphia delegation will be at the Common wealth hotel. W. R. Andrews, secretary of the State committee, arrived today to take charge of the preliminary work of the convention. The State committee will meet on, Tuesday to make up the roll of delegates and select the temporary offlters. An Investigation placed the blame for the shooting 011 four coal and iron pdlicemen who were located near the place where the shooting occurred.
