" What made yon think of such a thing, sir ?" he asked, Jolm Morrissey at Saratoga controls the fjreatest gambling establishment in the United States. His domicile is erected directly in the rear of Congress Hall and embraces sever .1 lots, for which he paid $20,000, though their original owner had only a few years previously purchased them for about one-fourth that sum. Over $200,000 have been expended on the buildings, so that the total investment has not short of a quarter of a million of d -'lars The gambling house is a superstructure of brick, tastefully ornamented, is approached by an imposing Hight ot steps, and is guarded by metallic effigies j of mystic animals. You enter a wide,) roomy, airy, stone hall, and turning And ' yourself in the reception room. No hotel of the kind approaches it in taste and elegance. Here you meet, or at least the writer and hi# friends met, about eleven o'clock the other night, some fifty or sixty men assembled ; some seated at cosy little tables discussing wine, others rambling around eyeing things curiously, but the majority standing up, hat on head and cane in hand, smoking freely and talking (occasionally swearing) loudly. Passing through this reception room, we entered a room said to be, and we should conceive justly, the most enticing jungle which lias yet been afforded for the retreat of the American tiger. The carpets cost over 81,500, The chandeliers are of green and gold of exquisite workmanship ; the brackets are gems in their way; the apartment is Hooded with gas (there being sixty-six burners in this room alone) ; there arc several mirors of the largest size and finest quality known outside of a king's palace ; there are bronze knights and natural and artificial flowers and ornaments in prefusion ; the walls are light and neat and clean, and are pleasantly suggestive to the eye : the ceiling is elaborately carved, and, most prominent of all are the tables scattered throughout the length and breadth of the apartment which tell their own st^ry—.tables of faro, roulette, rouge-et-noir, &c;—just now the rougeet-noir table seems to bo the chief attraction. The dealer is an old gambler, with white hair, long white beard and gold spectacles, aud could readily be mistaken for a clergyman. He is "assisted " by an adipose and flisliy sport in u light suit and highly colored necktie. Perfect silence is preserved, and a heavy game is being played. And now the crowd transfers itself to the roulette table, and now we find it busy at faro, The tiger is a chameleon, and assumes | all forms. Gradually tbe''chaos and old night" of Avenel place was redncted to system and order. The wheels of housekeeping revolved so softly that no one knew they moved, yet these were the results. Yon scarce ever saw the housekeeper glide about the halls, yet the servents declared her omnipresent.. Mr. Avenel found himself actually the inhabitant of a home once more as the years slowly passed away. He was sitting tm a piazza one day, smoking his cigar, and watching tbe graceful movements of Juliet Hawkhurst as she was planting training vines in a marble vase that occupied the centre of the lawn, when Mrs. Narley came out. " A nice evening, sir," said Mrs. Xarley. " Oh, there she is!" " W ho ?" Mr. Avenel asked. " My little dove !" and Harry Avenel's dark i'ace brightened into sunshine once again. "And you were right, for May and November never yet were happily mated. My uncle is an old fool; and yet I can't blame him, Juliet, when I look' at your sweet face." The countenance of Mr. Avenel was slightly confused when he met his nephew at the breakfast table the next morning, but, further than that, there was no sign of the discomfiture he had undergone, lie gave Juliet an exquisite set of wedding pearls when she was married, and congrat ulated Harry after a very cordial fashion. But he never proposed to Mrs. Hawkhurst, and as she had never expected anything of the sort, no harm was done. SiSodt.ar Strike.—One of the strongest pliases the strikes and lock-outs have yet assumed was that of the butchers of Hud dersfield, England, who recently held a meeting to consider what steps should he taken in consequence of the public dissatisfaction with the high price of meat, and the dissatisfaction of the butcher? with the nnreinunerative nature of their trade. It was then agreed that no butcher should sell meat to anybody for fourteen days, under a-petralty of £20, to be given to the Infirmary. The only parties exempted from this dreadful arrangement were the purveyors having contracts with public' institutions. It is difficult to see what other effect this action on the part of the lluddersfield butchers could have then to create a much livelier trade in beef and mutton, for fourteen days, among the butchers of the surrounding towns in Yorkshire. BUFFALO ROBES fiGNTS', LADIES' The First War Steamer.—In 1814 Fulton proposed to build a floating battery for the defense of New York harbor, the vessel to be propelled by steam, with a central paddle wheel. This is the first known proposition to use the new motive power for war purposes. This vessel was to carry twenty guns on her deck, and to make a speed of four miles per hour. In addition to her armament on deck, it was intended that she should carry two submarine guns one on each bow, so as to strike an enemy below the water-line ; besides this, provision was made for throwing a large body of water upon an enemy at close quarters. The ship was launched November, 1814, in a little more than four months from the laying of the keel; by June, 1815, her machinery was in place, and a trial trip took place in New York bay. which was a great success. At a late period she made a trip to sea, about twenty-six miles from NewjYork, and with all her coal and aimament on board, attained a speed of nearly sis knots. This formidable craft was named by her proprietor the Domolopos, but after his death she was called the Fulton ; she was used as a receiving ship at the New York Navy Yard alter her completion until 1820, when she was accidentally blown up by the explosion of the powder in her magazine. She was the first venture of the U. S. government toward war steamers. AND CHILDREN'S yUR8, "Why, that foolish child Juliet." answered the old lady sharply. " I ha'nt no patience with her, that I ha'nt." " What lias she been doing now?" asked the widower with an amused face. " Why,she's refused Ben Nichols' eldest son, as likely and beforehanded a young feller as there is in the country," Mr. Avenel started. " Ben Nichols! Why Mrs. Narley, she is only a child. It is said that by the expenditure of 836,000,000 for levees on the Mississippi River, 7,000.000 acres of cottou land and 2,500,000 acres of sugar land would be reclaimed, the annual product of which* it is estimated, would amount to £150,- 000,000 gold. There is a wheat field on the west side of the San Joaquin river,California, thirty five miles in length bv eight in breadth with an area of 179,000 acres. Estimating the average yield at sixteen bushels to the acre, it would give a total yield of 2,8GA,-2Q0 bushels, or 86,015 tons. This amount of grain would load 8,601 cars, which, if made up in one train, would reach for over eighty miles. The last rat story is from Chicago. Passing through this reception room, we entered a room said to be, and we should conceive justly, the most enticing jungle which lias yet been afforded for the retreat of the American tiger. Air castles are old as Adam, as we believe there is not a man, woman or child, but what has built or is building them. And they will continue to build and be built as long as there is a living person on th earth, the child looks forward to the time when it will have grown up to manhood or womanhood, and tells what it will do and be wliea it reaches that passage in life.
