It raged there with more or less violence for a year. Thence it extended northward to Nepanl, and southward to Madras, Ceylon and Malacca. In the year 1819 it visited Burmese empire and the countries lying to the east. In 1820 it appeared in Borbay, where it carried off one hundred and fifty thousand persons by death. Thence it went to Madagascar and along the east coast of Africa to Borneo, Celebes, China and the Phillipine Islands. In 1G21 it veered to the northwest. It pursued the course of the rivers and the travelled highways to Persia, Arabia and Asia Minor, Here it bccame almost quiescent for a time, and halted. It reappeared in the year 1823, and devastated Central Russia. It was in Moscow in 1830, and in 1831 spread over most of Central Europe; It appeared at Sunderland, England, in the month of October, the same year. In the month of January, 1822, it broke out in Edinburg, Scotland, and in February was in London. Its consequences at that time in the British metropolis were slight. In the month of March it showed itself in Paris, and spread rapidly all over France, causing the utmost consternation. It first appeared on this side of the Atlantic on the 8th of June, 1832, making its opening assault in Quebec, and its second in Montreal, on the 10th day of the same month. On the 21st of June, same year, it appeared suddenly in New York, the intervening- districts lying between our people and the citizens of Montreal and Quebec having escaped It spread in various directions, Philadelphia, Albany, Rochester, Boston, Baltimore, Washington, Cincinnati and New Orleans having all suffered from it during the period intervening between June 21 and the latter end of August. John Landis, aged twenty years, well known to the police because of his bad propensities, plead guilty to an indictment charging him with stealing £30 in English gold from a Brazilian. He also confessed to having knocked down and attempted to rob William O'Oonner a short time before. Recorder Hackett sentenced him to ten years in the State Prison— five for each offence. The sentence had hardly been pronounced before the occupants of the Court were startled by the shrieks of a woman in the hall of the building. At the same instant a woman weeping bitterly rushed through the door at the side of the Judge's bench, and falling on her knees implored mercy for her boy. Shrieking and moaning she entreated the Recbrder not to separate her from her only son. Landis, who was in charge of an officer, begged to be allowed to go to his mother. Business was for a moment suspended, and nothing could be heard but the mother's lamentations. An officer endeavored to remove her, but she clung to the clerk's desk, and three men were scarcely able to remove her. She was carried down stairs, where she screamed and struggled for a long time, attracting a large crowd. Finally a quantity of gold water was poured on her head and face, and she recovered and walked away. Flinging the vile drug into the street, I sank market! I counted it over and over; it seemed to possess a value that I had never attached to money in the old davs when father had lavished it so freely-upon me. Then I would have thought nothing of spending such a paltry sum upon the trimmings ot a single dress; now every penny was hoarded with a miserly care, for we had resolved upon having a home of our own. Well, to be brief, each year I attempted something more—first a poultry-yard, then the culture of bees, and so on—until, before we were hardly aware of it, our home was paid tor, and we in easy circumstances. " I had carefully concealed every trace of our adversity from my parents. I think I would have died rather than have gone home—a beggar. Now that the dawn of prosperity had set in, I wrote, asking them to come and see the little silkenhaired girl that, like a sunbeam, danced thronghour home. They came. Father accustomed to his broad acres, was astonished at the products of my small plot of ground. He declared I was the best farmer he knew of, and should have greater scope lor my powers. He bought a tine large tract of land adjoining our grounds, that happened to be for sale just then, and made me a deed for it. This is the origin of the country-seat you visited hst Summer, and admired so much. Belle is a fine horticulturist and an accomplished housekeeper. Should advantage had they been to me ? I never met any French people with whom I could converse,, and had never been able to secure a class in either language, while all the while my knowledge was becoming rusty by non use. It is painful to recur to this period ot my life; 1 was so unhappy. I expected every day to be the last my husband would be able to attend to business. Finally, driven to desperation by our misfortunes, I resolved to do something or die in the attempt. Attached to the house we occupied was a large lot for gardening purposes, and I made up my mind that out of that bit of earth I would dig our fortunes or, at least, a living with my own hands. I made horticulture and floraculture a study, and brushed up my knowledge of chemistry. It was hard work and small profits the first year; but having once put my hand to the plow, I never turned back. Our table was bountifully supplied with fresh vegetables and fruits, and what was better, my step had grown elastic, my eye bright, and my cheek rounded with health. My husband, too, found many a spare moment from business to assist me, and in doing so found himself growing strong and well again. Oh, how happy wo were! Surely there is a dignity in labor unknown to easel How proud I fait when I received the returns from my first shipment of vegetables to the nearest down on my knees, and ' O ray God! lead him not into temptation, but deliver him from evil,' was the prayer that went up from ray agonized heart. How desolate I felt. In the midst of a great city, friendless, well-nigh penniless, and, worst of all, haunted with the dreadful fear that my husband would commit suicide. The Egyptian Affray.—Mail advices from Alexandria give detailed accounts of the aflray between Consul - General Butler and the Khedive's American officers. Consul Butler, his secretary, Wodleigh, and an attachee of the Consulate, named Strologo, were dining at a Greek restaurant, where were also the Darty of officers—Generals Loring and Reynolds, and Major Campbell. As they were leaving the restaurant Loring and Reynolds saluted Butler, but Major Campbell passed on without recognizing him. Butler shouted after him, "Good evening, Major Campbell." Campbell retraced his steps, and high words and blows ensued. The whole party then went into the street, where Wadleigh tired several shots at Major Campbell, wounding him dangerously. General Reynolds then fired at Wadleigh, but without effect. The difficulty is reported to have grown out of a long standing enmity between Butler and Campbell.
