His easychair so inviting, his dressing gown so comfortable, his fireside so cozy, his belongings so conveniently scattered about, his club meetings, his pleasant little dinners with a friend or two—all would vanish like a happy dream, to be followed by that unknown, dreadful reality of a hereafter! At the same moment my brother, Colonel Custer, who on that occasion was officer of the dav, and whose duties required him to be particularly on the alert, rushed past my tent, halting only long enough to show his face through the opening and shout, "They are here!" Now I did not inquire who were referred to, or how many were included in the word " they," nor did my informant aeem to think it nece-sary to explain. "They" referred to Indians, I knew full well. But when the alarm of " Indians" was given, an'd in such' a startling manner as to show they were almost in our midst, the question was not " What xhall I wear? " bat " What shall I d )? " It has become so common—in fact, almost a law—to describe the costumes worn upon memorable occasions, that I may be pardoned if I indulge in a description which I will endeaver to make as brief as the costune itself. A modern Jenkins, if desiring to tell the truth, would probably express himself as follows: " General Custer Cfn this occasion appeared in a beautiful crimson robe (red flannel robe de nuit), very becoming to his complexion. His hair wan worn cm naiud, and peimitted to fall . arelessly over his shoulders. In his hand ho c irried gracefully a handsome Spencer rifle. To look into his frank, sunny face—for W'Csh Bulbo (his name was not an unfamiliar one to patriotic Americans, and had been thus abbreviated) was a eood fellow—to interrogate his brieht bine eyes, no one would suspec!- that Mr. Bulbo was any thing but the hapDiest of men. Below Central Express Office, Main St., Superintendent, Execution,—J. C. Lloyd and J. E. Holsenbake were hanged at Oglethorpe. Macon County, Ga , for the murder of Judge G. W. Fish, in February, 1871. Both men made speecnes on the gallows to a crowd of men who, widi the exception of some ladies who had come miles in their carriages to witness the spectacle, made up the list of spectators. Lloyd acknowledged his guilt, and died at peace with all the world, warning the crowd to "quit bar-rooms, let wiskey aloue, and forsake the ways of sin." Holenbake, whose crime was supplying Lloyd with means of committing the murder, and who was sixty-two years old, said : "I swear before you and be fore my God, before whom I shall soon appear, 1 am innocent." After dinner came the fascinating sight of Polly with her sleeves rolled up showing such white arms all stray lock* of hair tucked behind little ears, and away from cheeks where the color came and went in a moment—that the dishes might be washed. Then when she disappeared a moment Mr. Bulbo thought he would make a call, but when she reappeared in a fresh muslin, was moved- to ask if there was not somewhere for them to go. •WTJWTOT&T MARKET. -Ll The undersigned has fit'ed up a convenient and accessible Most Market in the room formerly occupied as a Bar-Room in the "Butler House*' Building, t. here he will keep a constant supply of the best of Meats of all kiudD suitable to the season. On breaking the envelope a dainty note, with dark lines of grief on the edges and de'icate tracery in a feminine hand within, fluttered mto his lap, while a beavv, darkly written sheet flopped boldly on the floor. He read first a bit from one, then from the other, in some confusion and dismay. The gist of both was that Horace Francis, an old friend of his father's, had lately deceased, and left Mr. Bulbo in charge of his daughter Mary's property until she should attain her majority. " Hearing such fine reports of your business capacity, and having been so well beloved of your father, I select yon of all other men in the world, dear Bnlbo," the dying man had Written. The fortune was large and had many cumbersome details; but Mr. Bulbo, for the sake of the trust, and with a certain pride in the appreciation of his abilities, gladly undertook to discharge the obligation. The lady had forwarded her father's letter, and begged that all communication beheld with her lawyer, as she hardly felt like meeting strangers at present. Mr. Bulbo had acquiesed, and for a year now had, with much trouUe to himself, taken conscientious charge of the property, often being obliged to neglect his own business, but had never seen the lady, their communication having been entirely through the lawyer. Now, in his own room, as bethought of the reasons, he dashed his hands into his dressing-gown pockets, and fairly howled; in the midst of which ebullition he rushed into the closet, threw the letters on the floor, and piled boxes, boote, books, every thing he could get hold of, over them. The mother was almost "frightened to death," of course, and while rushing around to get somethiag to kill it with, the snake got loose and escaped. After that Mr. Kopps proposed a call on another young laHy, but Mr. Bulbo had discovered that Polly sang; and as music was his great delight and he made some attempts, though no pretensions, in that quaiter, he insisted on a song. One followed another; their voices harmonized finely and another evening was gone. Tbis was but an example of many days. He paused for nothing, except once or twice to glare at the closet, until the valise was packed and locked, when he sat down upon it to wipe the perspiration from his forehead and consider where he should go. Then, in the quiet which ensued, he realized the sacrifice he was about to make. Well, well; it must be done. He laughed no more as he arose to complete his preparations. His honor was at stake. He might sleep then, at least; but no—curtain le«tures! A Snake Stoby.—A rather singular occurrence was related to us the other day, says the Stockton (Oal.) Herald. A little child of William Murray, w ho resides a few miles from the city, came into the house a few days ago, swinging a good-sized suafe? by the tail, and sang out to its mother—" Papa's black-snake! papa's black snake 1" The child had been accustomed to seeing and hearing about its father's "black snake" whip, and never having seen or Known anything about a real snake, supposed it had merely found a whip. The mother was almost "frightened to death," of course, and while rushing around to get somethiag to kill it with, the snake got loose and escaped. Fortunately the reptile was a non-biting species, er was too badly seared t» lDite,£andJtho child was uninjured. They went to the Lyn brook, and only got home in time for Polly to get tea. Polly had read some new that had particularly pleased Mr.Bulbo, and she was so lively and piquant it was delightful to talk to her. Sbe was remarkably welleducated, which surprised Mr. Bulbo, as Milelord was but a country place. If he had been rich he would have done the same—he, who had come and gone in this famous city of Brookley for ten years, treading his quiet patb of life uneriticised.
