It was jast in the midst of tbispleasant time that my father received a mourning letter from England announcing the sadden death of my ancle, and stating that he had left me twenty pounds, the remainder of his property falling to his widow and infant heir, he having secretly married his .housekeeper some eighteen months previously. My father swore— my mother wept, and I, frying to look deeply concerned, gloried in my trade. The following extract is from a Sunday sermon of Henry Ward Beecher:—People who were never sick could never believe that anybody else was aick ; but et any man get an autumnal catarrh, and before he gets through he will find that nearly every other man he meets has got an autumnal catarrh. How few there were who remembered the young gentlemeu at picnics paying their polite attentions to the ill-favored and the homely ladies of that party ! What an artistic eye those young men seemed to have ! How they seemed to have singled out the girls with pencilled eyebrows, the delicate profiles, and the sparkling eyes, and how few of them bestowed a word of kindliness and thoughtfulness to the poor girl who was half crippled ! We should therefore make a habit of bearing burdens in this way, and our piety would bo something mo'ie than a sentimental pleasure. Then there were a number of self-possessed people, who were always living in a groove of comfort, and who had never been out of it. If shiftless, thriftless, ne'er-do-well people went to them for assistance, it was so much easier to say to a man, " Go West, go West! " than it was to think and act on his behalf. Why, if it would please Divine Providence to make these selfpossessed people shiftless and thriftless for a month, it would do them a sight of good. They would find out then how much good telling a man to " go West" would do him. (Laughter.) Poverty is a good thing and a bad thing. Well, he (Mr. Beecher) would rather undertake to cure the bottom section of New Orleans than he would the bottom section of Boston. The good people coalesced, kept to themselves, had no fellowship with the erring, were so far above the bad people, that in Boston it would be difficult to raise the bottom section of the population into sympathy with the good. These latter were very apt to think that they had done their duty, when they had sent eeme poor, half-starved missionary to preach a little bit of the Gospel of Christ to the bottom sections of the population of their city. that I keeps full supply of the best mate always on hand, and the June V, 1867. Pittston, Pa. ALE, PORTER, &c. The contest between the Atlantas of the United States and the London Rowing club, was won by the latter in an easy manner. A London correspondent says: Both crews being in readiness, the gun for the start was fired at 6:23, and in an instant the water flashed as the cars of both crews dipped, and both boats sprang from their position as if impelled by one common power. To the surprise ofall who had witnessed the practice of both crews, the Londoners were the first to show in advance, and in about two hundred yards had forged a clear length, and were gradually taking the Atlanta's water. At the head of the river, close to Barnes Bridge, the London men had increased their lead to a length aud a half, amid deafening shouts of "Go it Stout," "up with her Withers," according as the feelings of the crowd dictated, and bravely did both crews respond to the cheers and enthusiasm of those on the shore. Doc Withers here called upon his men for a spurt, and nobly did they answer his appeal, gradually lessening the gap which existed between the boats, until they almost lapped the London boat. The fearful exertions they had made to do this, however, began to tell a tale, and the Americans already began to exhibit slight signs of exhaustion. Despite the gallant efforts of the Atlantas to hold their position, when they reached the waterworks opposite Chiswick Mall, the Englishmen were rapidly gaining on them, Stout, the London stroke, pulling a long and steady stroke which did not appear to distress his crew in the least, and which yet increased their lead bit by bit. Going down Cornev Reach, the Englishmen gained still more rapidly ; the distress of the Americans being so great that th y were obliged to slacken their pace. At Hammersmith bridge the Londoners led by twenty boat lengths, and the race was practically at an end. The Americans pulled on, however, but below the bridge they were ran into and had to stop for an instant.; this had no effect upon the race, as it was already lost Crossing to Craven Point from the soapworks the Londoners put on a spurt and regularly walked away from their rivals and arrived at Putney bridge at 6:50 amid enthusiastic cheering. Tne Atlantas followed and pulled the entire course, but were fearfully exhausted as they stepped out of their boat, when they were as heartily cheered for their pluck as were the Londoners. The time given as official was 21.16, over a course of four and a quarter miles. Thus finished one of the pluckiest and most determined stern races ever pulled by a defeated crew over this long and trying course. There is no doubt that they were outweighed and completely ontrowed. It is likely, however, that in time we shall hear of great suffering and considerable loss among the fishermen engaged in sealing. The season has been very stormy, with tremendous easterly winds, and the vessels engaged in the fishery, which usually are at hom« by the middle of March, have been late in returning. There are about five hundred vessels engaged in the seal fisheries under Newfoundland direction, mostly bark or ship-rigged steamers and small brigantines and brigs. These are usually crowded, the smallest craft carrying from twenty to fifty men, and the steamers carrying crews numbering from one hundred and fifty to two hundred—while on their return voyage they are simply overloaded. The steamers employed in these fisheries are all first-class boats, Clyde built, and immensely strong. They cost from £14,- 000 to £20,000 sterling each. Many English and Scotch merchants who have Invested their money in these fisheries have made great profits, as the the large vessels sometimes bring home twenty thousand seal skins, which sell readily at from five to seven shillings each. The fishing are about two hundred miles trom Newfoundland. This year great fields of ice have been driven upon the Newfoundland shores, bringing with them such numbers of seals that the homo population, men, women, and children, were able to kill hundreds of them. The great danger which the seal fishermen encounter on their voyages is that of being crushed in moving fields of ice. 1 he underricnod hai inC; become proprietors ot the above establishment would retpei-liully announce t J tlac pcop'e o! All was not sunshine with me, although I stuck to my trade as I had never done to my books, but the trials I then met and overcame served to make of me that which it was the height of my ambition to be—a true man. which can be produced. Having had a long and active experience in the Milling business, and being tire owner and operator of a Mill is the Cumberland Valley, producing seventy-live barrels of flour per day, from the best wheat grown in the State, he hopes to be able to sell a superior flour and at as low a rate as the market will afford. BUFFALO ROBES GENTS', LADIES' Fruits and Bekries. -Fruits and berries at this season of the year are not only precious luxuries, but great promoters okealth. They act upon the liver, prof mo ting that secretion naturally which many are in the habit of obtaining only by the means of artificial medicines. They thus avert many a disease resulting from a torpid condition of the liver. Another way in which they act beneficially is in the mechanial effect their little seeds produce in passing through the bowels, very much the same as the watering of an irritated eye-ball when any hard substauce touches that delicate organ, and this water, by dissolving the hardened contents of constipated bowels, keeps them in a healthier state than any pill or purgative invented by the apothecary. There can be no doubt that in the summer and fall seasons people who live mainly on fruits and berries and coarse bread can almost ensure exemption from sickness, while those who eat heartily of solid meats and vegetables two or three times a day are liable to all the diseases that flesh is heir to. They infest the interior of the viscera, as the liver, spleen, kidney, the braiu, and even fluids of the eye of many animals. While some are so very minute as to require a very powerful magnifying'glass to examine them distinctly, they giveD unmistakable evidence of having an appetite, looomotion and volition to determine their course of action. Life in all imaginable aspects, forms and conditions, is detected everywhere. But the minuteness of the physical structure of the bodies of parasites, which are mere points even when enlarged four hundred times under the magnifying properties of an instrument, overwhelms us with the esources of nature. It was jast in the midst of tbispleasant time that my father received a mourning letter from England announcing the sadden death of my ancle, and stating that he had left me twenty pounds, the remainder of his property falling to his widow and infant heir, he having secretly married his .housekeeper some eighteen months previously. The good people coalesced, kept to themselves, had no fellowship with the erring, were so far above the bad people, that in Boston it would be difficult to raise the bottom section of the population into sympathy with the good. The best qualities of GO 3 a w Particular attention also paid to the fitting and making of The Reduction in the Tariff.—The total reduction of revenue by the new U. S. Tariff and Tax bill is $53,057,269. The duty on salt, in bulk, is 8 cents ; in bags, sacks, barrels, or other packages, 12 cents per 100 pounds. The existing duties are reduced ten per centum on all manufactures of cotton, or of which cotton is the component part of chief value ; all manufactures wholly or in part of wool or hair of the alpaca and other like animals ; all iron, eteel, and other metals and their manufactures, which includes pig iron. But a duty of $15 a ton is imposed on Moisic iron, made from sand and by one process. The specific reductions on copper and lead were stricken out. Those metals are uow included in the ten per cent, reduction. The Tariff does not touch wines or liquors. Another Queer Way of Marryin®.— A pair were married at Plainview, Minnesota, in an unusual way lately.
