Fighting ensued at close quarters until the enemy was repulsed on all sides. Delarey, Kemp and other Boer leaders vainly attempted to rally their men. who retreated, suffering heavy losses. The British casualties were also severe. Atlantic City. April 4.—Two blocks, which were smouldering in ruins this morning along the board walk, mark the place where raged the biggest fire that ever occurred here. Militiamen, who patrolled the district all night, were relieved this morning frpm further duty, the authorities believing the police force capable of protecting property. Big crowds visited the scene, but the officers found little difficulty In controlling tiiem. The cause of the fire is still a mystery, but believed accidental. There were many robberies during the fire and the city Jail is full of prisoners who were caught redhanded pilfering property. The owners will begin rebuilding at the'first possible moment. The city council meets at 4 o'clock this afternoon and will enact new building laws under the authorlty of the new charter, signed by Governor Murphy yesterday. Pittsburg, April 4.—Harry Gheen, fireman, of Williamsport. and W. Losher, brakeman, ot Oleanv N. Y., were killed and Engineer J. A. Williams, of Pittsburg, probably fatally injured by a freight wreck at Cragdell, on the Bbffalo and Allegheny .division of the Pennsylvania railroad this morning. The train collided with a huge pile of rocks that fell on the tracks immediately in front of. the train, which was running at full speed. Two engines and 13 cars of freight rolled down an embankment, stopping Just at the water's edge of the Allegheny river.
