Before it was passed the bill was altered radically by Its opponents. All the provisions relating to the placing of carriers under the contract system were stricken out. and the salary system not only was continued, but the maximum salary of carriers was Increased from $500 to $600 per annum. Peeksklll, N. Y„ March 11.—Clarcnce Othouse and an unknown young man entered the hardware store of Durham Bros, early this morning and were In the act of robbing the place when they were discovered. Officers called on them to surrender, and, seeing that they were trapped, the burglars opened Are on the policemen. The officers returned the fire. Othouse was killed and his companion was shot in the hand. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The bride Is twenty years old. Mi- Olds is fifty-live. The bodies will be brought here in one large cotfin for burial. No details of the accident can be secured. Slilnliopple is a small settlement near Hancock, comprised of only a few houses and the Finch-Iloss Chemical company's works, where Scanlon was employed. The family removed there from this city five months ago. It Is presumed the home was burned at night while Scanlon was away and that all the occupants except Sirs. March 11.—Work on the Krltlsh transpacific cable from a point oil the Chinese coast via Yokohama and the Aleutian Islands to Barclay sound, the terminus on this side, is at the present time actually under way. While the talk over the project hfis engaged attention, the British government has gone to work, and-for several weeks the cable ship has been engaged In laying the cable from the Chinese coast terminus. An immense table plant is to be established at Barclay sound, and later the British authorities will construct stations, probably at Yokohama and also one on the Aleutian islands. The Jurors had been called in special session to indict Blondln if such was called for by the evidence in order that lie might lie extradited to Massachusetts from New York city, where he is now under arrest. Peeksklll, N. Y„ March 11.—Clarcnce Othouse and an unknown young man entered the hardware store of Durham Bros, early this morning and were In the act of robbing the place when they were discovered. Officers called on them to surrender, and, seeing that they were trapped, the burglars opened Are on the policemen. The officers returned the fire. Othouse was killed and his companion was shot in the hand. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The bride Is twenty years old. Mi- Olds is fifty-live. The bodies will be brought here in one large cotfin for burial. No details of the accident can be secured. Slilnliopple is a small settlement near Hancock, comprised of only a few houses and the Finch-Iloss Chemical company's works, where Scanlon was employed. The family removed there from this city five months ago. It Is presumed the home was burned at night while Scanlon was away and that all the occupants except Sirs.
