WILKESBARRE. Rev. Newman Hall had gained world wide fame as a Congregational clergyman. He was born In Maidstone, England, on May 22, 1816, and was, therefore. In his 86th year. He was a son o? John Vine Hall, a noted temperance advocate. Educated In Highbury College, he received the degree of A. B from the University of London. He also won a law scholarship and ob' talned the degree of LL. B. Afterward he studied theology and in 1842 was ordained aB a Congregational pastor In Hull. Later he became pastor of the Rowland Hill chapel, In London. During the War of the Rebellion in the United States, he was a firm advocate at the Union cause. Coming to this country, he spoke In various cities in the loyal interest and also preached before Congress. After Lincoln's death lie set on Toot the movement in Lon don that resulted In the erection by public subscription of the Lincoln Memorial Tower that adjoins Christ church. In 1866, he was elected president of the Congregational Union, of Great Britain. He was also widely known as an advocate of total abstin ence. In 1873, he made a second American visit and in 1884 a third. On both occasions he toured the country, lec turing and preaching in the principal cities. He achieved considerable success as a writer. Some of his books gained wide circulation, one of them having bpen translated into thirty languages. The storm was general throughout the eastern part of the state. From New York city to the Canadian border reports have been received showing that sixteen counties had received ill full force the effects of the gule and the accompanying fall of snow. These counties were Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, Albany, Schoharie, Schenectady, Montgomery, Saratoga, Essex, Columbia. WILKESBARRE. Rev. Newman Hall had gained world wide fame as a Congregational clergyman. He was born In Maidstone, England, on May 22, 1816, and was, therefore. In his 86th year. He was a son o? John Vine Hall, a noted temperance advocate. Educated In Highbury College, he received the degree of A. B from the University of London. He also won a law scholarship and ob' talned the degree of LL. B. Afterward he studied theology and in 1842 was ordained aB a Congregational pastor In Hull. Later he became pastor of the Rowland Hill chapel, In London. During the War of the Rebellion in the United States, he was a firm advocate at the Union cause. Coming to this country, he spoke In various cities in the loyal interest and also preached before Congress. After Lincoln's death lie set on Toot the movement in Lon don that resulted In the erection by public subscription of the Lincoln Memorial Tower that adjoins Christ church. In 1866, he was elected president of the Congregational Union, of Great Britain. He was also widely known as an advocate of total abstin ence. Some of his books gained wide circulation, one of them having bpen translated into thirty languages. The storm was general throughout the eastern part of the state. From New York city to the Canadian border reports have been received showing that sixteen counties had received ill full force the effects of the gule and the accompanying fall of snow. These counties were Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, Albany, Schoharie, Schenectady, Montgomery, Saratoga, Essex, Columbia.
