President Roosevelt Announces the Ever on the Alert—Alive to Every Washington, Jan. 14.—At today's cabinet meeting, the President announced that he had selected Hon. Whitelaw Reid, editor of the New York Tribune, as special ambassador to represent the United States at the coronation of King Edward of England. General James H. Wilson will represent the army and Captain Chas. Clark will represent the nary. Wilson was second in command to Chaffee in China, and is now on the retired list. Chicago, Jan. 14.—Unable to meet the excessive demands for margins, this morning, George Phillips, ex-corn king, posted a notice on the board of trade, infonAiitg his customers that all his open trades would be closed. On the strength of the announcement, rye, to which the raiders on the Phillips lines paid particular attention, fell 6% cents. A panic prevailed in that market. Phillips's losses may not be known for several days, but his fellow brokers say that his loss will be at least 9100,000. 3(. (j. Ennis, of the Adams street station, Brooklyn, shot and killed his wife and mother-in-law this morning. The tragedy occurred at the home of ttnnis, corner of Rockaway and Flatlands avenues, Canarsle.
