One Can** of Clie Evil of Drunken- Never In tlie history of stellar astronoihj has such au announcement been made as comes from the Lick and the Yerkes observatories. For the fiist time what is apparently a system of worlds in visible process of formation has been revealed. BUDGET There exists in the Manchester and other "north country" mills n custom known as "footing," which compels the girls employed to furnish, wine and liquors on holidays and festival occasions for themselves and the men workers, rul,lie attention has just been directed to this custom by Canon Hicks of Salford, who in his capacity of chaplain to the Snlfonl hospital, has seen the many evils to which it has led. neNN In Knitlnnd. HOLIDAY %MiOODS Havoc Created in Many Senate Resolution Thanks Two Serious Railroad Acci- Towns. Last February there suddenly appeared in the constellation Perseus a new star. It leaped from invisibility to an object of the first magnitude aud was at once recognized by astronomers ns being the most interesting of its class since the famous new star of Tyeho Brahe in 1572. After remaiuing very bright for a few week it slowly began to fade until now it is visible only in large telescopes. As in the case of other new stars several theories were advanced to account for such enormous increase in light and energy followed by such a_de eided full. One was that the new star had been rent by some internal explosion so violent as to cause it to tlar« up and reveal its existence to watchers on onr own planet. Another suggestion was that two bodies of great size and rushing through space at tremendous rates of speed had suddenly come into collision. Neither theory could be proved, but it was evident that there had been a celestial mtastrophe on the largest scale. Admiral Schley. dents. CO Pn 2 nominated BY president MANY LIVES WERE LOST. WORST IN THE COALKEGION l-'or the first year perhaps after n girl has entered her mill or factory she will not be asked or expected to join with her elders in one of these "footings." Temperance has been strongly advocated among the young in Manchester, as the rolls of Bunds of Hope and church anil nonconformist schools can show, and numbers make their working start in life as pledged abstainers. But with the first promotion, a birthday or a wedding in the family the unfortunate girl is reminded by those who ought to know better that tiie "footing" will be expected to celebrate the event. Her wages at these carlv stages cannot be large and to provide the bottle of whisky, the bottle of port and the substantial plum cake which is the orthodox form for this useless imposition to take she must either deny herself for weeks some infinitely more desired article of dress and save patiently or lay upon her poor little shonlders a miserable burden of debt by borrowing. Stone, or More Killed. Philadelphia, Dec. 16.—A storm which for severity and destructiveness lias not been equalled in this section for twenty-five years, visited Eastern and Central Pennsylvania Saturday night, causing unprecedented damage. The havoc in the coal regions Is enormous and the loss to railroad and mining companies will amount to millions of dollars. The Schylkill, the Lehigh, Susquehanna and Juniata rivers have riBcn as high as fifteen feet above their levels and all of their tributaries have overflowed. Inundating the surrounding country in more than a dozen counties. Innumerable washouts have occurred on the Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and Reading. Northern Central, Lehigh Valley, New Jersey Central and Lackawanna railroads. Bridges were carried away and traffic is at a standstill. In the Schuylkill Valley. 48 mines were flooded and in the Lehigh and Lackawanna regions the destruction was equally great. Hundreds of jmnles were drowned In the collieries, and It will be weeks before many of the mines can resume operations. Similar conditions exist along the Juniata river, farmers being compelled by the rapidly rising waters to abandon their homes. The flood was rendered more disastrous by the melting of the snow on tflCS mountain sides. At Pottsville and other places In Schuylkill county ten-inches of rftin fell In 25 hours. The high wind accompanying the rain unroofed many houses, and the individual losses will be considerable. Washington, Dec. lfi.—In accordance with prearranged plan, the Senate met at 11 o'clock this morning, In order to give ample time for the consideration of the Hay-Pauucefote canal treaty. One of the first items of business trans, acted was the presentation of a resolution tendering the thanks of Congress to Admiral Schley for Ills work in the Santiago campaign. The resolution was offered by Senator Jones, of Arkansas, the Democratic leader. Wiliiamsport, Dec. 16.—A freight train on the Philadelphia and Erie division of the Pennsylvania wunt through the bridge spanning Lycoming creek, between this city and Newberry at 6 o'clock Sunday morning. Three lives were lost. The dead are: John Martz, engineer, of Sunbury, married; Frederick Glass, fireman, of Sunbury, married; Oeorge Harley, brakeman. of Sunbury, single. The train was known as fast freight No. 83, and was running three hours late, owing to the disarrangement of schedule growing out of the storm. The bridge spanning the creek was a twospan iron structure, the first span of which gave way beneath the train. The engine and nine cars were engulfed in the Icy waters. The creek was greatly swollen as the result of the heavy rains, and it Is presumed the middle pier had been weakened. No effort could be made to reach the bodies, owing to the height of the water. devoted to Holiiiay Goods. Lamps to work by, or for fun. Lamps that are short, Lamps that art tall, On the lllth null 20th of August photographs of the new star taken by MM. Flamninrion and Antoniad in Europe showed it surrounded by "n nebulou* aureo.'u with a sharply defined contour," somewhat resembling the umbra and penumbra of n sun spot. Professor Max Wolf of Heidelberg explained these appearances as an optical effect. On a four hours' exposure, however, he secured a plate of the region showing a faint but extended nebula surrounding the star, niul yet with no evidence of connection between the two. Lamps to fit the pocketbooks of all. Lamps that are green, yellow and brown. BASEMENT. Washington, Dec. 10.—Secretary Long stated this morning that he still had the report of the Schley court of inquiry under consideration. As yet, Schley had made no protest against the findings of the court. "Should he make such a protest officially," said the Secretary, "I would he perfectly willing to grant him a new Inquiry." It is li.nl enough when sbc alone has to supply her coworkers with drink, for in such ease the quantity available will not be followed by serious after consequences. The worst occasions arc at Whitsuntide aud Christmas or big public holidays, when all the women furnish their "footing" upon the same scale, and much drunkenness is the result. A regrettable feature of the evil is that men should be so dead to all manly feelings as to countenance and it as they do by participating in the drink. Indeed, when the "footing" is bought the idea is that the whisky or rum is for the men who share in it and the wine for the women, though now it i3 not uncommon to purchase spirits only. Lamps that turn way up and, if necessary, way down. IT PAYS TO BUY AT THE Lamps that look as nice as a pearl, works all right in visiting your girl. Pile's Stiff Lamps for the parlor, Lamps for the hall. A month later Professor Ritchey of the Yerkes observatory found that the nebulous cloud recorded by the other observers was very nearly circular, some ten niHinles of arc In diameter, but of varying Intensity in its different parts, with the new star situated near the middle of the nebulosity. Apparently there was some connection between the new star and the nebula. This, while interesting, was not without precedent. In August, 1S8.1, n new star appeared in the great nebula iu Andromeda, perhaps thu best known ill the heavens. This star to tlie spectroscope exhibited no differences in constitution from the nebula itself. Washington, Dec. 1C.—The President decided this morning to reappoint Chas. A. The express train col. Uded head on with a freight train, both running at full speed. An oil tank car in the freight train exploded, throwing buining oil all over the wreck, and In an instant the entire mass of wreckage was in flames. Every coach of the passenger train and till of the freight cars except one tank car and a freight car were burned. The bodies of the dead were burned in the wreck. The survivors made desperate efforts to rescue the injured who were pinioned in the wreck, but the flames drove them back at every lioint. The Lamps above referred to are Rochester Burntrs of the newest designs and patterns, combining delicate shades with perfect workmanship, and wou.d make a beautiful wedding or Christmas present. Roberts, Jr.. to be postmaster of Brooklyn, and Clayton McMichael to be postmaster of Philadelphia, In some of the mills aud factories efforts have been made to suppress "footing" by forbidding them absolutely upon the premises. Practically, however, this attempt at remedy has proved almost worse lima the disease, as the only result has been that the carouse in such case is transferred to a public house, where even greater excess is indulged in. The more respectable women themselves would hail a deliverance with gladness, lint at present the system seems too strong for them. PRICES. PRICES.
