There is an intemperance of dress, of conversation, and of carnal indulgence generally equally deserving of condemnation with this particular instance; but which society winks at, nay, even glories iu. A manifest injustice. For there is many a toper who struggles hard against lua besetting sin, -w ho Weeps and repents and mourns over the horrible thralldoin in which Satan holds him as with a grip of iron; whilst many a slanderer and libertine and covetous person, "whois an idolater," thinks no harm of and makes no effort to escape from his detestable main street, pittbton, (Oppo»it« E. This fact accounts for the great amonnt of work he was able to perform. His genius was no moi'e 'remark-1 able than his painstaking industry. WE. WHYTE, . GENERAL AGENT, The use of lead in the form of pipes is in most cases rendered innocuous by the formation of an insoluble deposit upon the inner surface of the pipe, due to tire action of the carbonic acid held in solution in most water upon the metal. The use of cooking utensils in the construction of which lead has been employed is, however, always extremely dangerous. The vegetable acid often used in cooking will, in most cases, act upon and carry away a portion of this material. WK TRY TO PLEASE ALU G. T. June 30, l»T0-ly. A story is told of a German who had taken the precaution to insure the life of his wife for $5,(XX), and his stable for $900, believing the former might die and the latter be burnt, and he could not get along without some compensation tor the loss. Both policies had been taken from the same agent. In a few months after the stable had been insured it was destroyed by fire. Shmidt quietly notified the agent, and hinted to him that lie would expect the $900 at the earliest possible moment. The agent at once sent a carpenter to ascertain the cost of erecting a new stable of the same dimensions, having ascertained that the property had been insured for more than it was worth. The builder reported that he could replace the stable with new material for $500, but unfortunately there was an ordinance preventing the erection of frame buildings—the old stable having beeii of wood. He was asked to estimate the cost of a brick stable, and reported the amount at $750. The agent then notified Shmidt that he would build him a new brick stable in place of the old frame one, but Shmidt became very indignant at the proposition, saying: "I do not understand this insurance business. I pay you for nine hundred dollars, and when my shtable burn down you make me a new one. I not want a new shtable. I would state here, then, as a proposition for discus-ion, that the great law of temperance means this: The voluntarily abstaining from any indulgence or gratification, lawful in itself, for the sake of example, whensoever the indulgence is in danger of becoming a snare or an injury to the sold or bnrly of our neighbor. XX AND XXXX TORTER, This is the high ground of disinterested Christian philanthropy and self-denial ; and I take the position fearlessly, as one impregnable. Dr. Stewart states that, being employed in the investigation of these matters, he " found that the purest water dissolved lead pipe most rapidly, and was incapable of depositing on its surface the coating which rendered its use innocuous with other streams." We must confess to some surprise at this statement. It is a well-established fact that lead is insoluble in perfectly pure, that is to say, distilled wutor. If by purity, he means freedom from carbonic acid, we can readily imagine this to be the case. There lire other substances often present in water which would act with considerable energy upon lead when unprotected by the insoluble formation before alluded to.— Among these we may mention the nitrate of ammonia, which is often present in rain-water, though never in such quantity, we think, as to exert a toxical effect. —Little drops of rain brighten the meadows. He believes in the great law of Christian expediency as a governing principle. From love toward a weak brother, he would not do that which it was perfectly, lawful for him to do. If meat were offered in sacrifice to idols, he would not touch it; nay, further, fie would not cat meat at all, if thereby he should oll'end the conscience of that brother or cause him to ofTend. WHYTE, • Sole Agent for Fairchild's Gold Pens (first prize at Paris Exposition, 1807.) Dr. Stewart thinks that " perhaps the proportion of carbonic acid that is always present in rain-water may insure the carbonate of lead in the white paint against the solvent power of the water, or any acid that would otherwise' react upon it;" but it should be remembered that the doctor's experiments with metallic lead pipes prove nothing as to white-lead; and, moreover, that the act ion of a solvent upon carbonate of lead, prepared in the form of paint and ground in oil, is very different from the action of a solvent upon the dry, pulverulent pigment, or upon lead in a metallic state. The oil-paint is much less likely to be dissolved ; and we have little doubt that the gradual disappearance of paint from exposed surfaces is due rather to mechanical abrasion than to chemical solution. In this case, the injurious substances carried off would precipitate in the reservoir as sediment, and not remain in the PITTSTON, PENN'A.
