The buildings destroyed were the eight story structure 1219 and 1221 Market street, occupied by Hunt, Wilkinson & Co., upholsterers and furniture dealers, and three three story building* occupied by small merchants The big furniture building exteuded back a half block to Commerce street and was owned by Henry C. Twenty Bodies Have Been Recovered Commissioner Feeny received a let ter from C.'W. Wlnspear, the superin tendent of that Institution, on Sept. 1U last, stating that Mary Lake had become insane and demanding that she be removed. The commissioner found that she must be brought back to this county and proceedings taken to have her legally declared insane before she could be committed to an Insane asylum. Some correspondence ensued between Commissioner Feeny and Superintendent Wlnspear, and then the commissioner sent Superintendent Pierce, with a nurse and provided with strait- Jackets and other paraphernalia, to bring the Insane girl to her home county.Evans Bros. Philadelphia. Oct. 26.—The death list growing out of yesterday's big Are on Market street is mounting higher and as the search of the ruins progresses. The reports received ait police headquarters up to 9 o'clock this morning showed that the bodies of twenty persons had been recovered, and the work was still going on. Twenty-two persons are still unaccounted for. Some of these undoubtedly escaped and will be heard from during the day, but some bf them may be under the ruins. There are in the various hospitals twenty-two persons suffpring from injuries received at the fire and It Is feared that several of them will be unable to recover from their injuries.From the Ruins. Philadelphia never in her history experienced a Are whii'h spread with such great rapidity. The blaze start ed in the building occupied by Hunt. Wilkinson *S; Co., and within an hour the sacrifice of life had b«en made and the Immense loss of property had been accomplished. The origin of the lire is unknown. It Is said that an explosion of naphtha or gasoliiie in the basement was the cause, but tills Is denied by Mr. Wilkinson. Miss Lake was brought to the almshouse on Oct. 2, and since that time she has been under careful Inspection and has undergone several examinations at the hands of Dr. Isaac L. Millspaugh and Dr. John T. Sprague, who tlnally certified to Commissioner Feeny that she Is not insane, that there Is no evidence that she has ever been feeble minded and, on the contrary, that she is intelligent, well educated, Is willing to work and is most competent. Wilkinson & Co.'s building faces on Commerce street, a small thoroughfare. On the Are escapes at this end of the building two men and one woman were slowly roasted to death, while the horror stricken throng on the street below turned sick at the sight. In the froht. on Market street, a woman, driven to desperation, leaped from a window on the top floor and was dashed to death on the pavement. The plan was not carried out, and. while she was among the number who agreed to speak to the governor. she was not the leader. Twenty Bodies Have Been Recovered Commissioner Feeny received a let ter from C.'W. Wlnspear, the superin tendent of that Institution, on Sept. 1U last, stating that Mary Lake had become insane and demanding that she be removed. The commissioner found that she must be brought back to this county and proceedings taken to have her legally declared insane before she could be committed to an Insane asylum. Some correspondence ensued between Commissioner Feeny and Superintendent Wlnspear, and then the commissioner sent Superintendent Pierce, with a nurse and provided with strait- Jackets and other paraphernalia, to bring the Insane girl to her home county.Evans Bros. The reports received ait police headquarters up to 9 o'clock this morning showed that the bodies of twenty persons had been recovered, and the work was still going on. Twenty-two persons are still unaccounted for. Some of these undoubtedly escaped and will be heard from during the day, but some bf them may be under the ruins.
