Jlc has been with Mr. Stewart a great many years, and has won his complete confidence. He differs from Anson (■D., in the fact that he looks and acts like one bred and born in New York,, but like him he is a man of tine appearance, and, as might be inferred, of easy manners, lie lias a very remarkable acquaintance with the fashionable ladies of this city, and as Stewart trusts this class of customers, Mr. Brown is the autocrat of credit. When the salesmen send word that Mij. wants a,$6000 shawl on six months, Mr. Brown pencils on a card "yes" or " no," and that is theendofthe matter.' He knows the standing ofall the fashionable families iu this city, anil can tell at a moment's notice whom to trust. No wonder, then, that he is such a favorite with this class, since he holds thedestiny of dress and fashion among those who w orship these things with a supreme devotion. She had seen my linen —and they all came dashing down toward me. Nothing was left for me but to try It over again. My attempt would have been .1 perfect success had the animal I was attempting to imitate been a donkey; but, worst of all, in making the effort, I had so violently contracted the muscles of my arms, (I had clasped hold of the side of the boat), that I broke the rotten rope by which the boat was fastened to the shore, so that it shot out in the lake, bearing me with head and shoulders above the surface of the water, in full view of the gay party. The chief replied in a friendly mannpr by tomahawking him and jabbing his butch-- er knife into his vitals. HORN, BOOK AND MUSIC STORE, The Whoso Man Poulticed.—At a famous and fashionable watering place a gentleman one night was suddenly seized in bed with an excrutiating pain in the stomach, which neither brandy or No. 7 nor any other remedy could remove. His wife, after trying a number of things in vain, and having exhausted all her stock of remedies, left her husband's bed side for the purpose of setting a warm application. Guided on her return by a light which she supposed was the one just left, she softly entered, and was not a little surprised to find her patient apparently in a deep slumber, however, thinking he might still be suffering, she gently raised the bed-clothes, &c., and laid the scalding poultice upon a stomach—but not the stomach of her husband—which no sooner touched the body of the person than lie, greatly alarmed, and writhing under the torture of the burning application, shouted: "Hallo! hallo! what the name of heaven and earth are you about there ?" Then, with une spring from his bed, he made for the door, and rushing down stairs, in a frenzy of excitement, cried that some one had poured a shovel of hot coals upon him. -The woman, overcome with excitement and alarm, gave a frantic scream, which brought her husband hurriedly in from the next room to her rescue. The husband was so much excited, and also so much amused with the singular mistake and the ridiculous position of his better-half, that he forgot all his pains; but early next morning he, his wife, and trunks left for parts unknown. Y.t in 1839, and is now thirty-one years of age. Her father was an actor, and her earliest recollections are of the stage, upon which she made her first appearance in Cincinnati, when only five years old, in the character of Cora's child in the play of "Pizarro," by Sheridan. In 1857 she went to Paris and remained in that city for seven years, making frequent trips to London. She there moved in the first 6ociety and made the acquaintance of those distinguished in art, politics, and literature. Thackeray was among her admirers, and the Princess Metternich styled her the "American Belle." She has written three books—"Photographs of Paris Life," "Home Scene in Franee/' ami "Before the Foot Lights and Behiud the Scenes," all of which found ready sale. For several years after her return from Europe she starred it in New York and other cities. Becoming disgusted with the stage and the decline of the legitimate drama, she has abandoned the career of an aictress, and is now one of the most brilliant and popular lecturers in the country. CRACKERS AND CAKES death MCDOUGALL'S CENTRAL Pittston, J une 18, '7CWim Piltston, Pa, —The children are said to be so dirty in a place on Cape Cod that a mother frequently goes into the street and washes the faces of a half dozen children before she finds her own. —A friend of ours, who took a trip to California, said that he was not afraid of Indians, because he belonged to the Benevolent Order of Red Men, and knew all the-pass words ami winks, and all the figurative language and things, and no savage was going to touch him, initiated and fixed tip as he was in regalia. He hadn't g6ne more than a hundred mile? from Omaha before a band of Indians came at him and scooped hint up. He took the chief aside and whispered the password in his ear, and gave him the grip twenty-six timei on both hands, and made some observations about 'fifth moons' ami 'happy hunting grounds.' The chief replied in a friendly mannpr by tomahawking him and jabbing his butch-- er knife into his vitals. Our'friend remarked that these ceremonies were not observed in his lodge; but the chief wanted to show him all the peculiarities of the Western system, so he scalped him and chopped off his nose, and was" about to build a bonfire on his stomach, when some soldiers arrived and rescued him. He is now the baldlieadest Red Man this side, of the Pacific Ocean, and you never saw a person so disgusted with secret societies and Indian poetry. He is goimj to sue his lodge for passing a counterfeit grip on him, and for damage done by loss of lite hair. JOHN TJ. The poulticed gentleman still retains fhe handkerchief— a beautiful linen fabric, with the lady's name on it, which he considers of June Opposite Cooper's Hall, Shall I tell you the subject of my dream?
