All her cities and towns, and many of her farm houses, are crowded with those fleeing from the approach of the dread destroyer. Of course, among so many, a large number cannot recover. This i« the last straw at which they clutch, and it is vain. They come too late. They die here as they would have died At home, as soon or sooner. Others come early in the summer, and remain two or three months.— They are greatly benefitted. They think themselves well, and return to their homes in September, the worst month , in the year. It would be well for those to notice this bet, in all its bearings, who think the testimony of the Church is of no account and that the fathers of the Church are outgrown, superfluous relic* of a dead past. We showed, the other day, that the Bible itself was formed, preserved and handed down to us only through the instrumentality of the Church. Scranton, May 2,1807—ly Proprie tor. He was bashful, extremely so, was Josiah Hawley, at least in the presence of young ladies, most of all in the presence of the girl he loved. No young farmer in all the country possessed a better kept farm, or talked with more confidence among his compeer of stock and Crops, and on kindred subjects. But the glimpse of some pretty face or foot, coming in his direction, affected him like a flash of lightning. On such occasions he never knew what to do-with his hands and eyes, and always felt like screwing himselt into a mouse hole. How he ever contrived to approach Hester Thomas on the subject of his preference probably remains to this day as much a mystery to himself as it is to others. So your correspondent decidedly confirm all reasonable reports as to the healthfulness of the climate, and to its specific, beneficial effects in long diseases. The winter climate is as essentially necessary to complete, veetoration as the summer climate, even more so, for it ii the warm " open" thawing, changeable winters of Ohio and Illinois that break down constitutions and render recovery from disease difficult. Here the weather is dry, clear, and eold, imparting vigor with every inhaled breath of its bracing air. And therein lies the scientific explanation of the leading virtues of Minnesota air. The moisture, in lower latitudes, falls in copious rains, on tenacious soil, which holds it on the surface to be vaporized by the sun's heat, and made to rise again, filling the air with miasmatic exhalation, the operation continually repeating itself through the entire year. MONIES & PUGHE, But that young lady had quite an amount of fact and cleverness stowed away somewhere in her pretty little head, albeit it was yet on the dimpled, inexperienced shoulders of soventeen. Josiah, was worth, in a worldy way much more than any of her other suitors; good looking and intelligent enough to satisfy any one but an over fastidious person; unexceptionable, in short, barring his excessive bashfulness, which was a fruitful source of merriment among the young people in that little circle. And so, when Josiah, in his awkward, blundering way, began to exhibit his preference for her in various little ways, such as waiting on her to and from singing school, constituting himself her escort when she rode on horsobaek in the woods, and singling her out at quilting parties. Hettic took it all in the easiest, pleasantest manner possible. The girls laughed, and tho young men cracked sly jokes at the expense of her timid suitor; but Hettie stood up for him independently—encouraging him out of his shyness; never noticed any unfortunate blunder—and very likoly helped hira along considerably when his feelings reached "the culminating point," one moonlight autumn evenyig, as they were walking home together from prayer meeting. THE WANTS OF T1IE PBOPLE " I suppose it's a queer notion of mine, Hetty, but I have a notion that'man was 'Siah Hawley."" I heard an anecdote that evening of the poet, which was very characteristic, and quite new to me. VLhen at Pisa, his lordship found it difficult to keep up his practice with the pistol on account of tbo objections of his neighbors and tho municipal regulations of the place. He, therefore, by tho aid of a small gratuity, obtained permission from a farmer in the viciuity to shoot at a mark in his paddock. On the occasion of his first visit to the premises, the peasant's daughter, a very pretty contadina, accosted the; bard after tho genial manner of her country. She wore in her bosom a freshlyplucked rose with two buds attached to the stem. Byron sportively asked her to give him the flower. She hesitated, and blushed. He inflintly turned to his companion and rehearsed in English a very natural tale of humble and virtuous love, bitterly contrasting the apparent loyalty of this fair rurtlc with women in high life. Then, with perfect seriousness, he again asked for the rose as a token of sympathy for an nnloved exile. His manner and words moved'the girl to tears. She handed him the rose with a look of compassion, and silently withdrew. The incident aroused his latent superstition. He was lost in a reverie for several minutes, and then inquired of hi* friend if he remembered that Rousseau confessed throwing stones at a tree to test the prospect of his future happiness. The flower was devoted to a similar ordeal. It was carefully attached to an adjaD cent pale, and Byron having withdrawn several paccs, declared his intention of severing one of the buds from the stalk at one fire. He looked very carefully to bis priming, and aimed with great'firmness and deliberation. The ball cut the bud neatly off, and just grazed the leaves of the rose. A bright smile illumined the poet's countenance, and he rode back to Pisa in a flow of spirits." He made kirn stand upon a large stove, in which a fire wKs kindled. The bear was obliged to dance to keep his feet from burning; meanwhile a musician played a lively tune upon a. Ante. Whenever the bear was made to dance upon the hot iron, the musician played the same merry tune, and the hear supposed the music to be the cause of his pain. And it happened that ever alter, when he heard the musician play upon his flute, be .thought of his former suffering, and began to dance. Seeing this, the oz envied him his fine taste for music, the hone praised him for bis graceful motions, and » thoughtful owl pronounced him the happiest of brutes. "Alas!" said.the bear,"my apparent gaiety hides my real distress : I love neither music nor mirth: I carry a secret grief, and my dancing is prompted by the memory of pais." There is no being more miserable than the professional clown or harlequin. Folly is often a mask for grief and nnhappiness. A bright smile illumined the poet's countenance, and he rode back to Pisa in a flow of spirits." On one aide of the fire sat Mrs. Thomas, fat and fair, and at peaco with all the world, rocking and knitting, and refreshing herself at sundry intervals with a bite from a half eaten apple that lay on the corner of the table, and touching every now and then in a caressing manner with her foot, a sleek lazy looking cat that purred and winked on the rug before her. Hetty sat pn the other side, sewing, and busy in thinking how she would tell her mother that she expected a visitor. She would have given the world to be able to Bay in an off handed manner, that she expected Mr. Hawley to drop in about eight. But she recollected with a twinge of-conscience, how hard she had tried to get the old lady to accompany her husband-to Aunt Ruth's, in spite of her forewarnings of a spell of nouralgia : how ahe had plead headache as an excuse for not going herself. And she knew that her mother was quite sharp enough to draw her own inference from the facts, and from her being dressed with unusual care to spend an evening at home. " Was he a white man ?"
