Y., Sept. 2t.—1The ttAilsfer of Leon Czolgosz, the LOnvicted murderer of iPreaident McKinley. from the county Jail in Buffalo to the State prison in this place, was the occasion of one of the most exciting incidents that hate occurred in connection with the tragedy. Ciolgo»z had a very hArrow escape from violence M the hands of a mob here, (tofeplte the extra precautions that had been taken to pro H*cit him from the populace. He was greatly frightened by the experience, all of his bravado having left him. The utmost secrecy was observed in making tbe preparations at Buffalo for CzoIsobx'b removal, and he was gotten out of that city without much trouble. Sheriff Caldwell, with sixteen picked men, left police headquarters in that city with their notorious prisoner Bhortly after 10 o'clock lfcrtt night. The assassin was closely guarded. A spc cial car had been attached to the rear Ktf the second section of the 9.30 train on the New York Central railroad, and to this the assassin was taken. In anticipation of the arrival of the prisoner, news of his departure having been telegraphed from Buffalo by the news associations, a crowd of nearly 1,500 people surrounded the prison last night fop hours. At the time of the prisoner's arrival, however, which waB at about 3 o'clock this morning, the train having been nearly an hour behind time, only about 800 men and boyB remained at the entrance to the prison. Pale and trembling, Czolgosz was dragged from the train by the guards. Twenty local policemen had beefe detailed to handle the crowd and assist in {ne protection of the prisoner, but they were powerless to withstand the fury of the mob, which burgeU about the prisoner and guards, wildly clamoring for vengeance. The crowd made the onslaught suddenly, and the policemen had barely time to draw their revolvers. The prison gates were opened as quickly as possible and the assassin was pushed through without ceremony of any kind, but the movement was not made before the crowd had succeeded in raining blows on the prisoner and officers. As the assassin reached the steps inside the gates, his legs gave way. Moaning and shrieking, he was dragged into the prison office and placed on a settee, the most miserable wretch in all the world. He was in a state of complete collapse. Five keepers soon hustled him to a cell, where he will remain until marched to the death chair on Oct. 28. 28.
