Jacksonville, Fla., May 6.—The hunger of 10,000 homeless people was satisfied yesterday upon the arrival of relief trains and boats bringing provisions from neighboring towns. Early in the morning a commissary was established ih the center Of the city, and thousaqdg were fed dtiring the day. The relief fund is growing hourly, and every mall brings offers of assistance. An order was promulgated under msrtial law requiring all merchants whose stores were spared by. the conflagration to open their doors and sell to all who asked. The streets were crowded all day with shoppers who lost all In the Are, and many btores remained open all night. The destroyer Decatur will be ready for her preliminary trial In June and the destroyer Dale a month later. These boats are under construction by William R. Trigg A Co. of Richmond. Neafle & Levy of Philadelphia, who are constructing the Balnbrldge, the Batry and the Chauncey, have advanced those yeiselB to about the same stage of completion as the Dale and the Decatur. The Lawrence and the MacDonough, constructed by the Fore River company, are about completed. The Perry has been tried, but failed to make her speed, and her screws will be altered. Though King Henry, as ttell as other princes, hired many ships, Exclusive of those which the different seaports were obliged to furnish, he seems thus to have been the first king who thought of avoiding this Inconvenience by raising such a force as might be at all times sufficient for the service of the state. Historians tell us that he caused bis navy, which had been neglected In the preceding reign, to be put In a condition to protect the British coasts against all foreign Invasions, and that In the midst of profound peace he always kept up a fleet ready to act. Every portion of the city will be visited and food and • provisions ottered' wherever there Is suffering. At a meeting of the relief committee yesterday a resolution was adopted offering work to every unemployed person in the city, to be paid for at the rate of $1 per day and rations. The men will be put to work clearing away the debrli In the mined district. It Is believed 'his plan will prove a happy solution of the race situation and will prevent any anticipated trouble. Armstrong's placed on trial for his life before Judge tfewburger, charged with the murder of Dolly Reynolds In the Grand hotel on Aug. 16, 1898. He was convicted and sentenced to death on March 31, 1889. The date for his electrocution was set for the week beginning May 22, 1899, but on May 20 the conrt of appeals granted a new trial, and Dr. Kennedy was taken from Sing' Sing prison to the Tombs. His second trial began Feb. 8 of this year before Justice Fursman, and on Feb. 22 the Jury failed to agree. Jacksonville, Fla., May 6.—The hunger of 10,000 homeless people was satisfied yesterday upon the arrival of relief trains and boats bringing provisions from neighboring towns. Early in the morning a commissary was established ih the center Of the city, and thousaqdg were fed dtiring the day. The relief fund is growing hourly, and every mall brings offers of assistance. An order was promulgated under msrtial law requiring all merchants whose stores were spared by. the conflagration to open their doors and sell to all who asked. The destroyer Decatur will be ready for her preliminary trial In June and the destroyer Dale a month later. These boats are under construction by William R. Trigg A Co. of Richmond.
