That lady gave no evidence of any emotion excepting perhaps tlDat exuberance of spirits which characterizes tho meeting of friends. The conversation which took place between us was of a historical order : wo alluded to the times when our ancestors bade farewell to the sunuy hills of New England ; and clambered over the south western mountains, to reach the fair valley of Wyoming, wo talked feelingly of the times that tried mens souls. Wo would no! attribute your action to any sinister motives. You fancied that you wero'stnt into '.he world to accomplish much good, as you doubtless wero ; and you expected, that by a timely admonition, and, a glowing exhibition of the shame of the inebriate, you would, not only placo a restraint upon a popular Cvice ; but also snatch a briiliant and honorable voung man, from the gapiDg jaws of demorilization, and arrest his steps on tho verge of p. yawning gulf, from whose fathomloss depths hourly ascend cries of Lost! To a man who has been* accustomed to city life, and seeing dealers measure their customers, " weigh out their pile" and gently take all they have, a life among the rural population of this county for a short time is a happy contrast. The very soul of hospitality is predominant. No upstart, starched, shoddy arristocracy among the wealthy, nor any cringing, stooping obsecqu iousness to coax favors 0' steal your purse, by the lower classes. Such fare as they have for their own families is dispensed with a frankness and liberality that makes the stranger feol at home, and enjoy his rest. Sinco the I s of July, I have not heard the sound of the "Church-going-bell." And yet, I have not resided with heathen or infidels ; for I have not had to complain of the want of "stated preaching" as Ben Butler, the Banker of Sandy Hill, did, to Matty Van Buren, in the days of bank swindling in the State of New York. For the people in the woods, here, believe in " stated preaching"—are able and willing to pay for it, to the full satisfaction of tho pastors. For, be it known to you, that ever since Paul proclaimed that" it pleased God through the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe," the "universal yankec nation" has bolieved in preaching and Sabbath schools, and will have them. Ilence, in the township of Jackson, in the Miller neighborhood, (I say Miller because the people of that name are more numerous than those of any other noma), School District No. 10, they have their "stated preaching," by the Rev. Z. H. Greene, a farmer, and, that his preaching is acceptable, ig proved by the fact that, when the parishobers learned that his haying was bohind hand and that his wife and daughter labored Fe-manfully with him in the field for the reaaon that no male labor could be employed for mowing, thoy, for love, made a "pic-nic party," and, men, women and children, with haying implemontg, teams and provisions, repaired to his fields, four miles from their homes on tho Tuesday after the eclipse, took down and put into his barn, fourteen loads of hay. I think that a more substantial token of love for a pastor could hardly be given by a congregation. They also have a Sabbath school in this chargo, numbering but a trifle short of seventy-five pupils, under tho Buperintendenco o Mr. W. B. Easterbrcok, whose heart seems to ba enlisted in the cause.
