Stttlewest With Twrlcey Wear. New Rice Claimant. Washington, Dee. 1.—It was learned last night -that Mr. Griscom had sent a cablegram to Secretary Hay which indicates that the Turkish claims may soon be satisfactorily settled. All that the officials would say was that the information is encouraging. If Turkey should settle direct with the American missionaries who filed claims for $90,000 with the state department, no complaint will be made by the administration. It is conceded by some that this may be the result of the visit of the Kentucky, but no official word ot this has reached here. The authorities insist that the United States cannot afford to accept a settlement of the claims under cover of a ship contract, but it has no control over the claimants. Sufch ''a course would, however, probably not be welcomed by the authorities. Evans Bros. Evans Bros. New York, Dec. 1.—While the alleged last will of Rice was being offered for probate a new claimaut for the fortune of the dead millionaire was having her claim perfected by an attorney. E. W. Childs of Brooklyn. Miss Kate Rice, 70 years old, who is declared by her niece, Mrs. Bridget King, to be a sister of Mr. Rice, will share in the distribution of the Rice fortune if the plans of their lawyer can be carried out. Mrs. King declared that Miss Rice is the youngest of the late millionaire's sisters, and she hopes that this fact may be established through the surrogate's records of Kings county. One of Mr. Rice's sisters died iu Brooklyn 35 years ago, according to Mrs'. King, and left considerable property. Miss Rice, she says, received a part of this estate. If it can be learned, as she now believes it can be, that .William M. Rice was one Dof those among whom this property was divided, Mrs. King feels confident that both she a"nd Miss Rice will get a part of the Rice fortune which is now in litigation. % ' • PMNEBECKER'S STUDIO 40 SOUTH MAIN ISTRmmr.
