The government has been undecided aa to the next post to be given to Lord Kitchener. When the question first Arose as to his future position, the cabinet was in favor of sending him to be commander in chief of tndia. This proposition, however, it is said, was negatived in the highest quarter on the ground that Lord Kitchener was not fitted for the proper treatment of her majesty's native subjects. Then his name was considered in connection with the war office, but it wifs thought that he might wiRh to become more active there than the government feould desire, since it does not mean to do anything sensational in the way of reform. Finally it looked as if the quartermaster generalship might be offered to the conqueror of the Sudan. Now, however, it appears that he will be kept in South Africa as military director under the high commissionership of Sir Alfred Milner.
