The exact origin of the fire is not known, and those who should be able to tell have failed to indicate what manner of oils or chemicals were stored there in sufficient quantity to have caused the terrific explosions which were responsible for the greater part of the damage. Philadelphia, Oct. 30.—A cable dispatch from Home announces the death on Friday of Joseph C. lleywood, private chamberlain to the pope a«d a former resident of New York and Philadelphia. Mr. and Mrs. Heywood had for years been leaders in the American colony at Rome. Mr. Hey wood's death probably was due to paralysis. He was born in the south 81 years ago and after being graduated from Harvard took up his residence in New York, where he wrote literary and dramatic criticising for several journals. lie published several poems, novels and tragedies. The Hey woods moved to Home, where Mr. Heywood continued his literary work. At the time of his death he was writing a novel which had as a historical background the miracle at Lourdes. Pittsburg, Oot. 80.—The seoond lot of fossils, found by Prof. Hatcher, paleontologist of the Carnegie Museum, was shipped from i he fosa'l beds of Wyoming and Western Nebraska today. There are three oarloada in all, comprising 800 orates. One osrload was shipped on the 20th inat. The I third oaiload wl'l follow later. The first information of Alvord come by telephone from Boston to Vice President Hine on list Wednesday. It was from a man who had business with the bank and who had seen Alvord in the Hotel Torruine, in Boston. This information wan given to the police on Thursday, and detectives were sent to Boston, but failed to find the defaulter, who had recognized the man who telephoned to this city. Danger Soon Reeognlaed, One of the prescription clerks employed by Tarrant & Co. is authority for the assertion that the great danger was early recognized by those in authority in the establishment. D., of Shanghai, its agent in China, a report, dated Shanghai, Sept. 13, in which he states that the total number of Protestants known to have been massacred as the result of the antiforeign movement in China and concerning whose death there cannot be a reasonable doubt is 03.
