Sir Roderick Cameron was the only gentleman of British title who resided permanently in New York and was brought into daily intercourse with the life of the city. He was born plain Roderick William Cameron in Glengarry county, Canada, July 25, 1825. He was educated in the district school at Kingston and, coming to New York when a jfoung man, engaged in the commission business. In this he was successful, uud early in the sixties the firm of II. W. Cameron & Co., of which he hud become ,the head, established a line of clipper Bhips between New York and Melbourne. The firm finally became one of the great factors in the trade with the antipodes. New York, Oct. 20.—Archbishop Ireland of St. Paul, who returned a few days ago from one of his frequent trips to Europe, made an interesting statement yesterday concerning the Vatican's view of the uttrtude of the government of the United States toward the Catholic church in the Philippine Islands and in Cuba. The archbishop on this trip abroad, as is usual with him, had several audiences with the pope as well as interviews with cardiuals. Sebastopol, Russia, Oct. 20.—Authentic detail* have come to light of a plot to assassinate the czar which was prepared a month ago and for complicity in which several persons have now been arrested. There are u series of tunnels on the railway between Losova and Sebastopol through which the czar and czarina would have to pass while journeying to Spala in the Crimea. The scene chosen for the murder was the last tunnel, which ia 1,000 yard* long. He was born plain Roderick William Cameron in Glengarry county, Canada, July 25, 1825.
