She partially lifted herself, aud motioned to her husband, who hastily ooncealed his weapon and slunk, as if awestruck, from the chamber The widow immediately rose, and, after fastening the door, expended the remnant of hei strength in piling against it some bulky articles of furniture. This done, she sunk fainting beside her sister, who*had relapsed into her former condition When she recovered the use of her senses, night had conic on, and all around her was wrapt in darkness. The single window in the room was directly behind the bed, aud opened upon a rude piazza which sheltered that side of the dwelling. FEMALE BEAUTY ON CAPE COD Mar. 7, IS61 54lyl I A. WISNER, fj . No. #2 Front Street PISH AND OYSTERS. Nowhere else in all New England than Capo Cod will one sec so high an average ol female beauty of figure and hair and skin, as among the young girls of one of the peninsula towns on Sunday, and in no place is the change produced by the lapse of years, from twenty to thirty, so painful an&obvious. For the rounded, complete matronly beauty of the second span of married life, one may look without seeing a single instance. The cause of this is not far 08, and suggests itself at once to one who sees the congregations of women, with hererttnd there an old sick man among them, and then skip all the years of active, life down to early childhood before he finds the male sex again represented. For it is true that in the fishing season there are no men or boys on shore, and if you go among the group of bright, happy girls, who do not remember (4ie cloud that hangs about them, you will find that nine out of ten of them look forward to a union with one who is now away, and who expects to spend his life fishing in the summer and coasting in the winter. Now imagine ono of them sitting in her little home, two years married, with her baby in her cradle, and the northeaster howling about. She knows too well that at that moment he may be struggling in the breakers, while the Highland light that she can see glares down pitilessly, upon his agony ; for she has only to climb a spur of land behind her house to see the skeleton of a ship from which the cruel waves tore the desperate hand-hold months ago, and left the husband and father to sink in sight of his own home, without a friend to aid. Tho gravestones will not lot her stand between them, even for a moment, for they tell her how, in a single night,sixty-seven women in one littlo town were left widdowed and desolate. If sh will stay in her house and shut out the suggestions of peril, still she must look out, anil she sees, coming down the street, one whose lover sailed away years and yoars ago; and has since been missing. His vessel was seen going out by the race, bottom up, and when they told this poor woman all they knew, she pressed her hands to her forehead, and cast a glance out upon the waters, over which she has waited for his return. When a vessel arrives she hurries to the landing, and, nothing doubting for the long disappointment, waits and watches to the end. How little can we wonder, then, at the premature decay, when we remember that to the invetiable sorrows, of woman's lot, in whatever station, these otherg, intense and perpetual are added. 1 ONES NEW YORK TOHN McKENNA, tiENERAL PROIDl!CE, FISH AND OYSTER COMMISSION MERCHANT,No. 303 South 303 South Krout St., PHILADELPHIA. j For reft renfe see J. Main St, Pittston, Pa, (Jan. 16,'68 In the year 18—, a family of emigrants from New England established themselves on an uninhabited prairie near what was then the extreme borders of western civilization. They consisted of a husband and wife, the widowed sister of the latter, and her infant child. No neighborly greeting awaited them, for they were the only dwellers within a circuit of ten miles; and the nearest settlement was half a day's journey distant. The widow was a lovely but broken-spirited woman of twenty-two. Since her husband's death, her affections were centred in her babe. She had been left in comfortable circumstances; in fact, her brother-in-law being a poor man, the land they occupied, together with the farming-stock and implements, were "purchased with her means. In a few moments the shutters were flung apart, and her brother-in-law's body was protruded through the opening, which was without sashes. His arm was raised, and again the knifo hung suspended over the head of her unconscious babe. The helpless woman closed her eyes, and sent up a silent prayer to that Power who once before had turned aside the fatal stroke. At that moment she heard from beneath the window a low, hoarse growl, mingled with short, snarling yelps, as if from a crowd of infuriated animals. Then a shriek of mortal terror burst from the lips of the would-be assassin; his knife dropped harmless beside the intended victim ; he clutched for a few moments, franticly, at the window-edge, and then disappeared, dragged down by some resistless fee. Autumn had passed, and they were looking forward lo a season of comparative ease and enjoyment, when, one day, Mr. Ilartwell, as I shall call the head of the household, found it necessary to visit the nearest village, for the purpose of procuring supplies. These, it was arranged, should be forwarded to him by a passing team, in the course of a day or two, as his own wagon had broken down, and lie was forced to make the journey on horseback. The weather, when he started, had been slightly overcast, with a rising wind from the north-east; but none of the family were prepared for the sight which they encountered the morning after his return. A slight fall of snow which began the night before, had increased to such a degree that the drifting material was piled almost to the eaves of the cabin, and already rendered impassable every road that led to it. They were close prisoners, with no prospect of a speedy release, for the storm continued all day with the utmost fury. At first but little alarm was felt by the blockaded inmates. Their wood-pile was sheltered and easily accessible, and the food on hand would suffice for three or four days, at the end of which time they had no doubt the purchased supplies would reach them. They had never heard of the terrific tempests which sometimes, in that latitude, convert the prairies into a howling ocean of snow for weeks liinc, o to 8 !i X, 1S66.-U Beverages of all kinds of the best quality. T»f rei* ii hiJli t idition Next day, he spoke out more plainly. One of them, ho said, must be sacrificed to save the rest, and that one must be the youngest and most useless. The wretched woman clasped her infant more closely, and shrunk into the farthest corner of the room, as she heard the threat, and marked the glance which accompanied it—a glance telling not more of hunger than of hate. It was charity to suppose that the man's brain was disordered by his sufferings; but yet it was evident that this dire emergency had also served to bring into open view the workings of malignant passions long and craftily eoncealed. The widow had for some time suspected that her brotheri«-law regarded herself and her child with little warmth of affection : she knew him to be avaricious and unscrupulous ; but she had not thought that the touchstonc of extreme calamity would reveal hiui to her as a monster ! Now, however, in those wolfish eyes, as ever and anon they glared upon her darling, she read, even before his lips declared it, the full purpose with which the demons of greed and famine had joined to inspire him. A single stroke, he had determined, should both avert the lingering fate which every day brought nearer, and sweep the main obstacle from his path to competence; for the widow was thought to be consumptive, and, tailing her offspring, his wife, her sister, was her only heir. Mrs. Ilartwell had already succumbed to privation and anxiety. The widow and her unnatural connection were thus left, as it seemed, to be the sole actors in the hideous tragedy which was shortly to ensue. On tho contrary, they hate, and despise, and contemn the custom. " My Dear," growls the disgusted Fitz-Floss in tho city, whenco he writes to his dutiful and bepaniered spouse at Saratoga or Long Branch, '• don't cross jtour letters when you write to me. Yet his Maria Louise still persists in crossing her letters to her dear,* darling hubby. Why do women do it ? The fact is that a womaa-'s letter, liko a woman's work, is never done, and she does violence to her natural scl f when she finds that she has left only one fraction of a corner available for writing her name in, and must, perforce, fold up the economically-Written shoot, and slip it into its tiny envelope ; and even then, somo last thought occurs then to scribble on tho inside of tho wrapper-llap. Protection to Currant Bushes.—A good many ol our readers know the best way to prevent the currant worm from destroying tho foilage of the currant and thus preventing the rapid growth of this fruit, is to foed the insects with that excellent Jand wholesome medicine—the white hellebore. They never need a second doso. It kills and cures at one operation —kills the insect and curcs the bushes. A very thin dusting over the leaves, through a fine dredging box, will give enough to every worm that feeds on them. It is the easiest way to destroy insect depredators by the wholesale that we know of. But there is one condition quite essential to success. It must be applied promptly, before much harm is done, and tho bushes must bo watched for any second, third or fourth appearance. Some fail because they are careless in this respect. They often wait till the leaves are all stripped off, the crop for the season destroyed, 'and the growth of tho bushes checked and badly injured by the de/bilation. Then again, others are very watchful and careful at first, but allow a Becond appoarance to pass unnoticed aud unchecked. This poison should not be breathed by allowing tho dust to come in contact with the nose, or it will produce soma seezing and considerable irritation. It is the-tefore bes|, to attach the dredging box to tho end of a stick, as long as a common cane, orjseepon tho windward side, and apply the powdered hcleboro only whon there is but little breeze. Although it adheres to tho leaves, tho slightest rain or even dew will carry it off from tho glossy skin of the fruit; and as the currants ripen, some time after tho effects have gone, littla care is nocossary, or danger to bo foared. It is best, however, always to wash tho fruit before i using, to romovo any possible dust which migfit adjoining tLe prepared at liar^o" STREET BLA CKSMITH SHOr !
