At this period of moving, most people become familiar with the general appearance of dust, and the peculiarly disagreeabe sensations produced by its getting into the eyes, nose and mouth. Few pause to consider what it is or where it comes from. We repeat tho passage, "Dust thou artNand to.dust thou shalt return, but we hardly realize that tho almost impalpable particles which exert their pungent power to compel us to sneeze, or cc-Ugb, or make tho tears to run down our cheeks, may be composed of the same matter that constituted the body of some ancestor a thousand years ago, and for whom we never felt called upon to weep until AVorking as an ordinary hand in a Philadcl phia shipyard, until within a few years was a man panned John L. Knowlton. IIis peculiarity was that, while others of his class were" at the ale houses, or indulging in jollification he was incessantly engaged in studying upon mechanical combinations. One ot his companions secured a poodle dog, and spent sis months in teaching the quadruped to execute a jig upon his Kind legs. Knowlton spent tho same period in discovering some method by which he could saw out ship timber in a beveled form. That saw is now in use in all tho shipyards of the country. It cuts a beam to a curved shape as quickly as an ordinary saw- rips up a straight plank. Knowlton continued his He took no part in parades or target shooting, and in a short time afterwards he secured a patent for a machine that turns any material whatever ipto a perfectly spherical form. He sold a portion of his patent for a sum that is equivalent to a fortune. The machine was used cleaning off cannon balls for the Government. When the ball comes from .the mould the surface is incrusted, and the ordinary process of smoothing it was slow and wearisome. This machine almost in aTi instant, and with mathematical accuracy, peels it to the surface of the metal, at the same time smoothing out any deviation from the perfect spheroida' lorm. Its presence is determinable by a very simple test. Strong sulphuric acid has the property of freeing carbon from its combinations in'organic substances. If a piece of wood bo immersed in it it will be con"verted into charcoal. If then, a con" tainiug strong sulphuric acid, be exposed to the atmosphere the acid will after a time become blackened by a carbonization of the organic matter deposited upon its surface. It has been found that in malarial districts, sulphuric acid thus exposed becomes blackened much more readily than in other places, thus proving the presence of organic matter. This is a more severe form of the disease in which soreness and swelling of throat is a prominent symptom. The throat is swollen inside and'out. Swallowing is painful and difficult. If the inner surface of the throat is examined, it will be found red, inflamed and often covered with a membrane in patches of a dirty white, or ash, or yellowish, color. The fever is high and the pulse quick. There is more prostration of strength than in the simple form, and more painB. In view of these facts it will be seen that streets filled with dust, must be prejudicial to the sanitarv condition of our large towns, nnd that the laying of this dust by sprinkling, is more than a mere matte.r of comfort to their inhabitants. Our readers have been informed of the method adopted last year in London, i. e., the use of deliquescent salts, to lay the street dust, and of.the success that attended the ex ' • periment. We have no doubt of the value of this method and urge its trial in the large cities of this country. The additional cost of the salts would probably be compensated for by the diminished necessity for frequent application, and the increased health and comfort of the people, as well as the saving to merchants of the damago to their wares, frequently a serious matter along dusty thoroughfares. '09. " Can a spirit be photographed ?" still continues to be an exciting question to certain portions of the community. A Bostonian makes public the fact" that in 1867 he sat for his picture in the rooms of a photographer living in the Connecticut Valley, - During the process the artist became strangely agitated, and when the plate was developed a bright but vapory female form appeared standing at the side of the sitter. The photographer declared he did not know how the form got on the plate, he could only say that he saw the woman, that he had occasionally taken similar pictures, but through no agency of his, and that he did not want to have anything to do with spirits. ' Mr. Mumler made a statement last week to the effect that when an engraver in Boston in 1SG1, he used sometimes to try experiments in a photographic gallery. One Sunday, while entirely alone in the gallery, he attempted to obtain a photograph of himself, and then first discovered while developing it a second form on the plate. Subsequent attempts produced remarkable results. Whereupon he determined to leave his own business, and devote himself to photography. WAGON IRONING. E.N. FRISBIE,Pres't. Whenever the skin is very hot and dry, it should frequently be bathed all over with water of a temperature to suit the feelings ol the patient. This, if frequently done, in a remarkable degree, diminishes the fever and quiets the nervous iritability. After a good bathing, the patient will frequently recover from his delirium, bccome quiet and fall asleep, while the pulse falls from 10 to 20 in the minute. It is said on good authority, "In terrible cases of Scarlatina, where the oaor of the breath is putrid, and the mouth and throat are filled with tenatious mucus, while the swollen tonsils close the throat, this remedy alone, seems capable of rescuing the patient." In all malignant and gangrenous ulcerations, it is a remedy of great power.
