They were at Tlen-tsin the night of the first raid by the Boxer*. They left by armored train, with scarcely more than 20 minutes to get ready. This was one of tlie last trains to leave the city. They reached, a Chinese merchant steamer, which was to bear them to Hhanghai, and an hour later learned that the forts of Taku were to be bombarded that night. Their steamer was just behind the foreign gunboats, separated from them by a narrow neck of land and in the line of fire from the forts. They reached, a Chinese merchant steamer, which was to bear them to Hhanghai, and an hour later learned that the forts of Taku were to be bombarded that night. Their steamer was just behind the foreign gunboats, separated from them by a narrow neck of land and in the line of fire from the forts.
