Were Lo»i Kansas City, July 3.—David B. Hill's mission to Lincoln has failed. He has heard Bryan's ultimatum, and bo agreement has been reached. Mr. Hill returned to Kansas City yesterday afternoon. A Pennsylvania delegation, headed by James Kerr, clerk of the house of representatives under Speaker Crisp for four years, and M. M. Dunlap, followed Mr. Hill in the pilgrimage to Lincoln. They also urged the reaffirmation of the Chicago platform and no specific declaration for free silver at the ratio of 16 to 1. It was argued that such a reaffirmation would not be a new feature in Democratic political conventions. "I am sure that Colorado people are no more anxious for the realization of the principles of the Democratic platform than are the people in many other states, but I want to say to you that when Colorado forsakes the principle of 10 to 1 and when the people have ceased in their support of that principle I will be found still fighting, even though alone. New York, July 3.—What was thought at first by Methodists to be impossible of accomplishment has been done. One-third of the $20,000,000 called for by the bishops of the Methodist Episcopal church as a twentieth century thank offering has been collected. The Rev. Dr. Edmmid M. Mills, secretary of the commls«ofl appointed by the general conference to take charge of the collection, has anhouilced that only two-thirds of the total amount has yet to be subscribed. Ten million dollars will be spent on education in this country and in foreign lands. The remaining $10,000,000 will be used for the carrying on of charitable and philanthropic work, for city evangelization, for infested funds, for the support of conference claimants and for the payment of church property debts. The Ohio Wesleyan university subscribed $505,000 and the Syracuse University $250,000. Other colleges oncl seminaries have subscribed generously. Hobokan, N. The Democratic national committee held its first meeting yesterday, but did little business beyond appointing subcommittees to hear the contests from Montana, Oklahoma, Indian Territory and the District of Columbia. All the subcommittees except that dealing with the District of Columbia contest heard arguments, some of them reaching conclusions and others postponing action. Especial attention was given to the Montana case. The members of the subcommittee say that no conclusion was arrived at, but the friends of Senator Clark claim that a majority of the subcommittee declared for the seating of the delegation bearing the senator's name.
