BY (ILLEN HUNT. ICAL. Some time ago a poorly dressed boy made hia appearance at the farm of Mr. John Thomas living in the town of Lake, and asked for work. Mr. Thomas had nothing for the boy to do, and was about sending him away when a daughter of the farmer entreated that he might ba employed in doing something about the farm, ah* taking pity on the boy's friendless look and destitute condition. Mr. Thomas told the boy he might stay with him until be could get another place. The boy, between fourteen and fifteen years of age, immediately went to work, and in a few days it was found that be was so uselul about the farm that he was employed and taken at once into the family. The boy said he iiyed in New York; be thought his parents were dead, but he did not know, and that he had been sent West with somo other boys, and put to work on a farm. The man he was with treated him so unkindly that he ran away, and coming to Milwaukee he walked out to the farm, and fortunately for him, succeeded in finding a home. The action of the farmer's daughter ia appealing for.the boy appeared to awaken a feeling of gratitude in the little waifs heart, and he could not show his thankfulness or attachment for the young lady in too great a degree. A few weeks ago Mr. Thomas' daughter wa» married and with her husband wenHo Chicago to live. Tho boy appeared to take the absence of his mistress very much at heart and to mourn over it. Last week he went to Chicago, and finding her entreated that he might live with her and her husband; but thia being impossible, money wasgivep him to pay bis fare home, a number of presents were made him and he was sent back. He came home, but the losa seemed to upset hia mind. He tried to work, but could not, and finally cried and mourned into a fit of lickness. He waa kindly taken care of by Mr. Thomaa' family, and on Wednesday morning appeared in much better spirits; but while the attention of the family was directed from him the boy got np from his bed and, fastening an old comforter about his neck, attempted to hang himself to the bedpost. Some noise made attracted the iattention of Mrs. Thomas, who went to the room to find him hanging and atruggling. He waa taken down and by careful attention soon recovered consciousness. The boy said he did not want to live if Miss Mary» as he called the young lady, was taken from him, and that he felt so sad when she was away he did not care what became of him. Yesterday the lady, in answer to a despatch, came up from Chicago, when the boy exhibited his joy ia every possible manner, giving her his promise that h« would make no more such attemp'l upon his life. The workmen engaged in digging a cann! near the present railroad-station, in J854, found a skeleton with a breastplate of fine gold buried face downward. The precious piece of armor, which waighed six pounds, was broken up and the pieces secretly sold to jewelers. Two larger pieces, which appear to have been the shoulder bauds, and are covered with chasing and enamel, havo been given up by a jeweler iu Faenza, but the remainders are probably lost. Some soldies who were digging rifle pits for a target shooting, cauie upon a quantity of silver ware—enough to fill three wheelbarrows —all of the finest workmanship. There were vases, drinking cups, dishes, and candelabra, richly chased, in a style which was at first conjectured to indicate the Renaissance period. The fact that the field where they were found is still callod " Pappenheim's Camp," led to the belief that they had belonged to that famous commander of the Thirty Years' War: but a closer examination has revealed the ancient Roman marks of weight and fineness of metal on. many of the articles. As Hildesheim is not more than thirty miles distant from the Winnefeld, where Varus and his legions were anniliilated by tha Cheruskian chief Hermann, in the year A. D. 9, it now seems probable that these spoils once belonged to the Roman general. The finest and best preserved article is a vase, twenty inches in height, resting upon lour griffins, between which are figures of boys in the act of spearing sea-monsters. There are two shallow dishes, one of which has a relief of a sitting Minerva, the other the infant Hercules strangling the serpents. Some of the driukine vessels are eight or ten inches in height, the cups surrounded wjth wreaths of laurel, between which are masks or the heads of animals. The last accounts from Germany say that Dr. Benhorf has succeeded in deciphering twenty-four inscriptions on the vases which will shortly be published in the Archeological J jurnal of Gottingen. L. L.
