I bad hardly got comfortably sheltered before a gentleman and lady dashed up to the door and dismounted. Like myself, they were seeking shelter from the storm. The man was middle aged, and exhibited in bis person the strong athletic frame, the open and genial face of the Southern planter; but there was in his countenance now a touch of sadness, a seemingly equisite sense of sorrow. His companion was a young girl of exquisite beauty, with dark, soulful eyes, and hair black as night. She looked, indeed, a daughter of the tropics, and the tall, splendid form was regal in its majesty. She was such a woman as a man could wish to live for, and if need be, to die for. They were both in traveling costume, and from their conversation I judged they were father and daughter, just setting out on a journey, and endeavoring to reach the river in time for an up-going steamer. Shortly afler this arrival a negro boy drove up with a cart containing trunks. On one of these was the name of " Mrs. Harding, La." My resolution was taken on the instant. I would follow these people, I took passage on the same steamer. I would not lose sight of the girl.. I was satisfied she was going to her brother. I insinuated myself into her presence, and at into conversation. I was one-half in love With her already ; before we reached St Louis, I was wholly so. I learned that she was going to New York for some object she did not reveal. I imagined I knew what the object was; bnt it had become of secondary importance now, for I was deeply iD love. Deatu of the German Chemist Schonbein. —The telegraph announces the death of another eminent philosopher, whose labors have conduced greatly to the progress of science during the last half century. Christian Friedrick Schonbein was born in Wurtemburg, Oct. 13, 1799. At the age of twenty-five he was a professor of chemistry at Reihau. After visiting and spending considerable time in Fiance and England, for the purpose of completing his scientific education, he commenced a brilliant career in the university of Basel. His first experiments in this celebrat,ed institution, led to important voltaic and eleCtro-chemical investigations, which resulted in the demonstration of important principles. In 1839, hrs attention was attracted to certain peculiarities in the chemical action of oxygen, and its existence in the allotropic condition to which the name of ozone has been given, was made by him the same year. In 1845 he invented gun-cotton. The later portions of his ife have been devoted to experiments with oxygen, and the production of numerous works upon abstruse physical and scientific subjects. The snake—a cobra di capalla I now saw—darted up its huge hooded head with the hideous rings about its eyes as if about to strike. I shut my eyes and murmured a prayer. Then it glided away with swift motion and disappeared in the darkness. I staggered to my feet and fell swooning in the arms of the guard. For weeks after I was very sick, and when I was able to be about I found my hair as white as you see it. I have not touched a drop of liquor since."' Brewer, and he used to place "n his shop window piles of paper, beginning at the largest up to the then smallest size, 16mo; but to finish oflf the pile he cut cards so as to bring them to a point. Ladies used to go in and ask for that " dear little paper," which induced him to cut paper into smaller sizes. Then came the difficulty of the place for address; and the result was he invented the envelops, and had metal plates made for cutting them to shapes and sizes. This just pleased the ladies, and orders came to him tor the little paper and envelopes from all parts. Thia at length became such a demand upon his time that he got Dobbs t Co,, of London, to make them for him. A Woudebfdl Child.—The members of a small but highly cultivated world in Paris are at present much occupied with a great marvel. This ia a pretty young girl of twelve or fourteen, who has received a good but not extraordinary education, but who to the amazement of every one, speaks a number of languages with extraordinary ease, and has rapidly developed within a few months a depth and extent of knowledge of every kind which is literally miraculous. Her parents and friends, who have been with her constantly, declare that her reading has been limited, and her knowledge of the world next to nothing, yet there is scarcely an event in history, a great work of art, a distinguished man of letters, or artist, or monarch, or statesman unknown to her. Of all these she speaks as if they were known to her by experience. A distinguished jurist and philosopher, who had heard of this living miracle declared, after several hours' conversation, that there was not a judge in Europe more profoundly familliar with every phase of crime, every caprice of the aberrations of passion, or every theory of reform and punishment than this infant. It has been observed that her mind darts like lightn ing in conversation from hint to conjecture, and that she surmises and draws forth lacts and truths with a strange power like divination. " She learned from rae ten times more than I knew myself on a subject which I had studied for years," was the remarkof a well known savant who had conversed with her in hopes of acquiring knowledge. There is no claim to supernatural or mystical influences, and the power, whatever it be, is all purely mental. NEW FALL AND WINTER STOCK! Particular attention paid to FURNACE WORK. Give me a trial. At last I heard footsteps approaching. Then there was a rattling at the lock. It was the guard. lie opened the door. The snake—a cobra di capalla I now saw—darted up its huge hooded head with the hideous rings about its eyes as if about to strike. I shut my eyes and murmured a prayer.
