He is the most pains-taking and elaborate man about getting up his dress that lives in America.— This is his chiefest and his pleasantest foible. He puts on his old whift overcoat, and turns up the collar. He puts on a soiled shirt, saved from the wash, and leave one end of the collar unbuttomed. He puts on his most dilapidated hat, turns it .wrong side before, cants it on to the back of his head, and jams an extra dent in the side of it. He puts on his most atrocious boot*, and spends fifteen minutes tucking the left leg of his pants into his boot top in what shall seem the most careless and unstudied way. But his cravat—it is into the arrangement of his cravat that he throws all his soul, all the powers of great mind. After fixing it for forty minutes before the glass it is perfect—it is askew every way—it overflows his coat collar on one side and sinks into oblivion on the other—it climbs and it delves around his neck—the knot it conspicuously displayed under his left ear, and it stretches one of its long ends straight out horizontally, and the other goes after his eye, in the good old Toodles fashion—and then, completely and marvelously appareled, Mr. Greeley strides for the rolling like a sailor, a miracle jDf astounding costumery, the awe and wonder of the nations. After (without mentioning the name) referring to the decease of a modiste, and remarking "she gave the name to. one of the leading French houses in the city," the cofrespondent continues: " The family referred to reside on one of-the side streets, not far from Stewart's, have a large house, large income, and live in prolusion, their customers being among the exclusives of the city, and their prices something to wonder at; but while their styles are thu perfection of delicate taste, not one of the family can read or write. This comes on authority of one who knows them welL Of course the business is managed by a well educated accountant. But the modistes make up in high living what is lacking in culture. Costly dinners, the free use of strong wines, claret and lager by the goblet full, as common drinks, and brandied coflee daily, were alleged as the cause of the sudden death referred to." Tuk Efffct of Smoking_ on Boy?.-— Dr. Dccaisne, (Bull. Gen. de Ther) in the course of investigations ou the influence of tobacco on the circulation, has been struck with the large number of boys, aged from nine to Gfteen, who smoke, arid has been led to enquire into thfr connections of this habit with impairment, of the general health. lie has observed thirty-eight boys, aged from nine to fifteen, who smoked more or less. Of these, distinct symptoms were present in twentyseven. In twenty-two there were various disorders of the circulation—oiuit de souffle in the neck, palpitation, disorders of digestion, slowness of intellect, and more or less marked taste for strong drink. In three the pulse was intermittent In eight there was found on examination more or less marked diminution of the red corpus cles; in twelve there was rather frequent epitaxis , ten had disturbed sleep ; and four had slight ulcerations of the mucuous membrane of the mouth, which disappeared on ceasing from the use of tobacco for some days. In children who were very well nourished, the disorder'was in general, less marked. As to the ages, eight of the boys were from nine to twelve years old; nineteen from twelve to fifteen. The duration of the habit of smoking was, in eleven from six months to a year, and in sixteen more than two years; The ordinary treatment of anremia in general produced no effect as long as the smoking was continued, when this was desisted from, health was soon perfectly restored, if there were no organic disease.—British Medical Journal. The knaves are the rascally politicians who affect to be generally concerned about the welfare of *' the dear people," but who, in reality, are only animated by a desire to get their thievish fingers in the dear people's pockets, through th# medium of public office. The fools are they who make ridiculous bets, such as those we now read about. For instance. Senator Pomeroy has just made it foot of himself by tramping through the streets of Leavenworth bareheaded, with-a gaping crowd of other fools at his heels. Another fool has just wheeled a barrel of apples in payment of an election wager, from a provincial town in Massachusetts to Boston. Another fool, and a New York one, is announced to wheel u negro wench through some of the streets, and still another proposes to put in a full day's work grinding a handorgan. Even the clouds, when they break up, have a ragged and vagrant look, and appear to wander homeless about the sky, for there is no golden fire in the far west now fur them to gather about and sun themselves 111 its warmth, lliey seem to move along in doubt and fear, as if trying to find the blue sky they have lost The woodman returns home at night with his head bent down, feeling there is nothing cheerful to look round upon, while his dogikeeps close seeming to avail himself of the little shelter his master affords from the wind while they move on together. The pleasantest thing vre see is the bundle of fagots he carries on his shoulders, as it reminds us of —the crackling fire, the clean-swept hearth, and the cosey-looking kettle that fits singing a quiet tune on the hob. We pitv the poor fellow with the bundle under his arm, who stands looking up at tho guide-post where three roads meet, and hope he has not far to go on such a stormy ami moonless night. —Book of I)ny», (OIO.W. Foolish Election Wagers.—Popular elections always bring the knaves and the fools of society to the surface. Bettinj; of any "kind should be discountenanced, but particularly that ridiculous kind of which we now speak. Qt. L.PALMER & CO S NEW STORE Pittston.
