The broad parachute-like leaves of the peltate saxifrage, delicate ferns, soft most brilliant lichens abound, and in following up the ravines, cabinet pictures open at every turn, which, while composed of materials mainly new to the artist, constantly recall the most valued sketches of Cataine in the Alps and Appenineg. It would be incurring too great a risk, he said, vehemently ; the lace would be found and confiscated ; he would not consent to the arrangement. The lady agreed that she should, like a good wife,-go without the lace. And,so the pair started for Paris, monsieur well'pleased that he had avoided this new extravagance. At the frontier they were met as usual witli the demand, "Anything to declare?'' They said, " No." It was enough, and they were allowed to pass without further trouble. Now here begins to show -inself the folly of men. The lady gave her husband a look, and the husband began to foresee the bitter reproaches of his tender spouse. It was evident that she might have passed the lace without danger. She would certainly takte her vengeance for the loss of her coveted prize in a good lecture. To avoid this horror, it became necessary to convince the wife that there really was danger. She must be searched. Monsieur whispers to ooe of the customs' officers that be imagines the lady at his side has some lace hidden about her person. She was immediately taken aside, and in a few minutes the officer of customs returned, his face beaming with satisfaction, to inform the gentleman, with a profusion of thanks, that his supposition was well founded. The lady had at least 10,000 francs worth of lace hidden among the folds of JOHN McDOUGALL'S HOTEL! Owing to this difference and the great variety of exposure and Uher circumstances there is a larger number of species of plants within the district than probably can be found within a similar space anywhere on the continent Prof. Torrey, who has given the received botanical names to several huodrod plants of California, states that on the space of a few acres of meadow land he found hundred species, and that within sight 01 the trail tSsually followed by visitors, at least six hundred may be observed, most of them being small and delicatc flowering plants. FREEMAN, Invites the attention of the public to his choice seeetion of An Unfortunate Pkedicamext.—A Paris paper relates a curious incident that lately occurred. A male child was put out to nurse immediately after its birth, with a woman living at some distance from the city. Three months afterwards the parents called to see it. The nnrse produced a girl baby and insisted that this was their child. By dint of threats she was, however, obliged to coniess that, with the hope of earning a double fee, she had carried the boy to the foundling hospital, and the next day had presented herself at that institution to adopt a child, supposing she would receive the same she had left. It turned out that she received a girl. On inquiry at the hospital Tt was discovered that at the hour when the child of these distracted parents was left there, another male child was also deposited, and there were no distinguishing marks. The father, reasoning that he might always be tormented with doubt if he left either, concluded to adopt both, and did so. QENTRAL HOMHM* RICH JEWELRY, WATCHES, CLOCKS, "The main feature of the Yo Semite is best indicated in one word as a chasm. It is a chasm nearly a mile in length. The central and broader part of this chasm is occupied at die bottom by a series of groves of magnificent trees, and meadows of the most varied, luxuriant and exquisite herbage, through which meanders a broad stream of the clearest water, rippling over a pebbly bottom, and eddying among banks of ferns and rushes; sometimes narrowed into sparkling rapids, and sometimes expanding iuto placid pools which reflects the wondrous heights on either side. The walk of the chasm are generally half a piije. in height above these meadows, and where most lofty are nearly "perpendicular, sometimes over jutting.- At frequent intervals, however, they are cleft, broken, terraced and sloped, and in these places, as well as everywhere upon the summit, they are ov- ITPPEB Pi-FWTtHf.. , j. Spencer ft Oo.'s celebrated "By no statement of the elements of the scenery can any idea of that scenery be given any more than a true impression can be conveyed of a human face by a measured account of its features. It is conceivable that any one or all of the cliQs of the Yo Semite might be changed in form and color, without lessening the enjoyment which is now obtained from the scenery. Nor is the enjoyment any more essentially derived from its meadows, itc trees and streams, least of all can it be attributed to the cascades. These, indeed, «re scarcely to bo named among the elements of the scenery. They are mere incidents, of far less consequence any day of the summer than the imperceptible humidity of the atmosphere and the soil. The chasm remains when they are dry, and the scenery may be, and often is more effective, by reason of some temporary conditions of the air, of clouds, of moonlight, or of sunlight through mist or smoke, in the season when the cascades attract the least attention, than when their volume of water is largest and their roar like canstant thunder. The walk of the chasm are generally half a piije. in height above these meadows, and where most lofty are nearly "perpendicular, sometimes over jutting.- At frequent intervals, however, they are cleft, broken, terraced and sloped, and in these places, as well as everywhere upon the summit, they are ov- ITPPEB Pi-FWTtHf.. , j.
