THE FLOWEH OF LIBERTY. BT o. W. BOLJtK.y Makisg Saukrkuavt.—As several ladies within the past two weeks have desired tis to rcpub- / lish our receipt for making this much esteemed dish by many persons, we herewith comply with their request, in order that it may be in time for this year's crop of cabbages. It is this : In the first place let your" stand," holding from a half barrel to a barrel, be thoroughly scalded out. the cutter, and the stamper also well scalded. Take off all the outer leaves of the cabbage, balve them, remove the heart, and proceed with the catting. Lay some clean leaves at the bottom of the stand, sprinkle with a handful of salt, fill in half a bnshel of the cot cabbage stamp gently until the juice just makes its appearance, then add another haudful of salt, and so on until the stand i* full. Cover over with cabbage leaves, place en top a clean board fitting the space pretty well, and on top of that a stone weighing twelve or fifteen pounds. Stand away in • cool place, and when bard freezing oomes on remove to tho cellar. It will be ready for use in from four to six weeks. The cabbage should be cut tolerably coarse. The Savoy variety makes the beat article, but it is only half as productive as the Drumhead and Flat Dutch" —Germantowq Telegraph. ATTORNEYS j T LAW. WHOUBBAItX OBC • Wmtti AND LIQUORS. The slight Naples and the stout Queen of Spain should meet in sympathy and interchange experiences common only to women who have, kingdoms to throw away. Isabella would not listen to those who would have helped ber to postpone the deluge. About five hundred years before Christ, the master of Greek tragedy, in his master piece, makesa remark which we quote for the benefit of this unfortunate queen and all others, male and female, in a similar position: "For somehow this malady attaches to tyranny, not to putoonfidenoe in its friends." It ia not too much to My that in these reipects more has been done, richer and more prolific discoveries have bees made, grander achievements have been realised, in the coarse of the fifty years of our own lifetime than in all the previous lifetime of the race, since states, nations, and politics such as history makes us acquainted with, have bad their being. It i| in the three momentous matters of light, locomotion, and communication that the progress effected ia this generation contrasts most surprisingly with the aggregate of the progress effected ia all generations put together since the earliest dawn of authentio history. The lamps and torches which illuminated Belshazxar's feaat were probably just as brilliant, and framed out of nearly the same materials, as those which shone upon the splendid fetes of Versailles when Maria Antoinette presided over them, or those of the Tuileriee daring the Imperial magnificence of the First Napoleon. Fine wood, oil, and perhaps wax, lighted the banquet halls of the wealthiest nobles, alike in the eighteenth century before Christ and in the eighteenth century after Christ. There was little difference, except in finish of workmanship and elegance of design—tittle, i( any advance, we mean, in the illuminating power, or in the soarce whenee that power was drawn— between the lamps used in the days of the Pyramids, the daysaf the Coliseum, and the days of Kensington Palace. Fifty years ago, that is we burnt the same articles, and got about the same aaiount of light from them, as wedid fivethousaad year* ago. Mow, we use gas of which each burner is equal to fifteen or twenty candles; and when we wish for more can have recourse to the electric light or analogous inventions, which are fifty-fold more brilliant and farreaching than even the best gas. MALiee is heartless, and those who perpetrate it should, aa a punishment, become heedless. Whatever other phrase of weakness, wretchedness or crime you may assu me, Ixraov* in £vima««C—With the return of lengthened and pleasant cool evenings comes the query to all, how shall we best improve them? There are a thousand pleasant way* oi spending a fall or winter evening, within the reaeh of those who have command of their ow* time; and prominent among these are, indulgence in literary pursuits. How few comparatively. of the young people of the present day, appreciate as they should* the inestimable privileges they enjoy? Occasionally, it is true, we meat with* young man or a young woman, who firmly grasps i&'e idea that "knowledge is power," but these, .unfortunately, are the exceptions, not the rule. Thousands of young men who luwre comfortable homes, whose parent* are willing to supply Ahem with books and papers—instead of availing themselves of these advantages, spend their longCailwd winter evenings either in idle lounging around corners, or in company with frivolous associates, male or female. Thus, winter after winter passes away, each one bringing them nearer to the age of manhood, but not fitting them for the proper discharge of the duties that a full manhood requires. They enter upon the busy stage of life with none of the safeguards which a cultivated intellect throws around its possessor. They start life, laboring under a thousand disadvantages, and confronted by innumerable obstacles which disappear like shadows before the well informed mind. The fact that they do not contemplate adopting a professional career does not in any degree relieve them from the charge of being untrue to themselves, their friends and their country, while thuse fritting away the most precious hours of their lives In idD« indifference, and frequently in the company of those, association with whom, is contamination. But if you really mean to try the medieine dodge, you must choose your school. If you are to be an allopathic you need but three things; opium, calomel and antimony. Anything that cannot be reached by them ought not to be cured. With these three swords yon can slay all diseases or all the patients; and in either case, there is an end of suffering. If you select the homaepathic treatment, you have only to buy a manual and a box, about aa large as a. cigar-box, of pillules, or tinctures. After a little time, you can put pill to symptom as rapidly as the postoffice clerk oan distribute to names and boxes. If silence and mystery are not your fortt, you may have equal success by judicious talking. MaDy people can be talked out of anything. If laudatory words do not abate symptoms, they may increase reputation. The patient may die, but, if those that still live think that you are ' the most knowing doctor they ever met' (and it's your lault if they do not), then you axe sure of being called again. It ia not too much to My that in these reipects more has been done, richer and more prolific discoveries have bees made, grander achievements have been realised, in the coarse of the fifty years of our own lifetime than in all the previous lifetime of the race, since states, nations, and politics such as history makes us acquainted with, have bad their being. Say to the nurse, ia a low tone, 'I think yoa lurre a right view of the case;' and before you leave say to the mother, 'I could not have done better for the caae. myself than you have done.' If the child gate j well, as it will, nine times in ten, if yo* let it : alone, yon will have the credit ia that familf : of extraordinary skilL If it dies, it will enly bring oat the moral view,'We nuist all die.—' When one'* time eeme bo skill e*a cure.' But if you really mean to try the medieine dodge, you must choose your school. Always have an eye to the future. Whoever dies, see that the living like . you. Dead men furnish no practicc."
