A PRETTY STORY. the man'i wonder at the strange proceeding. Keeping his gase fixed upon the door, he remained for * foil hour, then seeing no sign of their returning his patience was exhausted, and he went oat abruptly. In that hour the thought* that paued through his unhappy brain were of a fearful nature. Out of the whirlwind of passion, one deliberate purpose had resolved itself. And now as the cold air fell upon his hot face, he tossed the thick, damp masses of brown hair baek from his forehead and turned his steps homeward. Arriving there, he turned into the library, and wrote rapidly for several minutes. The letter he carried into Bertie's chamber and left it upon her toilet table. It was a cruel, bitter letter; but he meant that she should never know peace again after having read iU— Deceit like hers was deserving of dreadful punishment. It was A hard task to go» away and leave hit new home. lie had toiled very hard-ADr it, and had anticipated so much happiness in its postestion. And here it must end. Tom thought everything that made life tforth the keeping mutt be left behind, and he bedome a wanderer on the face of the earth; a vagabond, perhaps, he said bitterly. But would it matter now? Standing in Bertha's room, with the delicate perfume* the loved stealing around him, poor Tom'* agony wa* increased. Qnf.of her tiny flippers lay upon a stool where she had left it, and he snatched it up, kissing it passionately, while a hitter groan bunt through hit lips. "Oh, Bertie, Bertie! How I have loved you!" And then he put the little thing Into his pocket, the only memento he would carry away with him. He would take one long look through the house, then he would go and wait for that man until he could punish him after which he would fly the country, and see her no more forever.MAJ. GEN. JOkil p. Major General Hartranll was a citisen of Kor ristown, Montgomery county, and his first S gagements in lift were in connecUon with the constraction of iome of the improvements i„ that part of the State, he then acting in the capacity of a civil engineer. Later in life, yottlD_ Hartranft devoted himself to the stud; of It* to the practice of which profession he waa admitted With great honor. After pursuing the law for some years, the war of the Rebellion was precipitated, when the lawyer immediately became a soldier, and waa oalled to the command of one of the first " Three Month's Begiment," In this connection it will be remembered that the Fonrth Regiment refused to go into a fight because its time had expired while the battle was in progress. Colonel Hartrauft remained on the field when his regiment marched off, and was placed on Oen. Franklin's staff, who complimented him for his bravery. The conduct which, distinguished our candidate for Auditor General, thus early in the war, has characterized hit career during the entire struggle. He has been engaged in all parte ef the country as a soldier in defense of the Government-has fought bravely in very many battles, and has to-day a record as glorious as that of any man in the nation. A Difficult Question to Aks^kr.—In the western part of the State of Pennsylvania it is the custom of the Methodists to hold camp meetings, during which there is nroch loud preaching and shouting by the members. Some years since one of -these meetings was in full blast, and the noise attracted an old bsckwoodss man who had never seen anything of the kind before. He came to the edge of the camp, aeat - ed himself on a log, rested his rifle on his knees, and became an attentive listener. The sermon over, the " exhorters" began to circulate and one of them singled the old fellow out as a good subjeot to operate upon. He began by questioning him and supposing cases to him, until he wtould neither say " yes" nor " no," ho would or he wouldnV He finally broke out (and he stuttered " orftilly") with " Mister p- preacher, mm-may I ax y-yor a q-question f" " Certainly." Keeping his gase fixed upon the door, he remained for * foil hour, then seeing no sign of their returning his patience was exhausted, and he went oat abruptly. GEN. JOkil p. He began by questioning him and supposing cases to him, until he wtould neither say " yes" nor " no," ho would or he wouldnV He finally broke out (and he stuttered " orftilly") with " Mister p- preacher, mm-may I ax y-yor a q-question f" " Certainly."
