Then came another body of Malay, Madras and Bombay men, forming a portion of the military garrison of the colony, they, too, uniformed and armed, with bayonets glittering above their beads. Then came a force of poliee of Chinamen, wearing a kind of half uniform, eaoh bearing a stout, heavy baton. After them came a body of police, composed of tall muscular Sikhs, with flashing eyes, with huge turbans upon their heads, wearing a light uniform, and bearing muskets with bayonets fixed. It seemed a mockery, for there was no murmur or manifestation of disapproval in all the crowd, and, indeed, the countenances of the Chinese seemed rigid with terror. Brar Baiting and othrr Sports in England.— Bear baiting was unquestionably .the most fashionable pastime of our ancestors during the reiens of the Tudor and Stuart monarcbs. In his Sitiory of England, Lord Macaulay quotes passages from the diary of a Puritan, wrKten in 1643, in which complaint ia made that Henrietta Maria, queen to Charles I., had returned to England from Holland, "bringing with her, beside a company of savagfr-like. ruffians, a company of savsge bears, to what purpose you msy judge by the sequel. Those 1Dear8 were left about Newark, and were broug'it into country towns constantly on tbe Lord's day to be baited, such is the religion those here related would settles amongst us; and if any went abou$«to hinder or speak against their' damnable profanations, they were presently noted as Roundheads or Puritans, and sure to b* plundered for it." In tracing tbe causes which Jed to the restoration of the monarchy, and to the recall of Charles II., Lord Maeaulay records that nothing weighed so much with our ancestors as the unpopularity of tbe Puritans, occasioned by their austere repression of all publie pastimes. "Agvnst the lighter vioes," to quote, Macaulay'sown words, "(he ruling factionwaged war with a zeal little tempered by humanity or by common-senseu Sharp laws were pasted against betting. Public amusements, from the masques which were exhibited at the mansions of tbe great down to tbe wrestling matches and grinning matches on village greens were vigorously attacked. One ordinance directed that all the Maypoles in Englsnd should forthwith be hewn down. Another proscribed all theatrical diversions. Rope dancing, puppet show*, bowls, borse racing, were regarded with no friendly eye.
