This was on Sept 30, and the next day all Christendom was shocked with the announcement or two more such livei sacrificed to some unknown demon in human form. The death of the eighth victim was flashel over the wires on Oct 3, and that of tbe ninth and last in 1888, on Nov. 10. Ona more victim fell early this year, and only a few weeks ago fragments of a woman's body were fished out of the Thames, whioh may or may not have been the eleventh. Jack the Ripper's Crimes. Col. G. L. Gillespie, of tfte army engineer corps, has made his annual report on the work done during the flscal year just ended on rivers and harbors in New York state. CjI Gillefp'e says that New York city can grow in only one direction, and that is Into Westchester county on the north, sinoe on all other sides it Is surrounded by water, and the development of the water fronts along the Hudson and the East rivers must, therefore, be oerttin and rapid.
