Chicago, May 23.—When ft arc Antony, in the person of Kyrle Bellew, assisted Queen Cleopatra, personified by Mrs. James Brown Potter, to alight from the deck of the royal barge to the stage of McVicker's theatre last night, one-third of the occupants on the groutul floor and nearly all those in the balcony and gallery hissed to their hearts' content. These expressions of disapprobation were answered with stamping of feet and clapping of hands by those who occupied the twelve boxes and the front rows of the parquet When the applause had died away the hissing was continued, and a third time were the marks of disapprobation and greeting renewed. Then the play was allowed to proceed without further interruption. The occupants of the boxes included Cyrus Mc- Cormick and party, Mrs H. O. Stone, the Farwe l family (Senator Farwell excepted) j Reginald De Koven and Mrs. De Koven, nee Miss Farwell; Hobart Taylor and party, and others of the elite of Chicago society. After partaking of whisky they had brought they discovered the little 10-year-old daughter in the second story of the home, to which she had fled. They brought her down stairs and accomplished their purpoae. They left the old man bound and his wife and child in a most pitiful condition, threatened to burn the house and cut out the tongues of their victims If they divulged the namee at the perpetrators of the crime. *' The helpless victims were soon found by a passing friend and the alarm was given. A posse of whites and blacks started in pursuit and captured the villains near the scene of the assault They were taken to the county jail, where they are guarded by a strong force. An attempt was made to break the jail and lynf h them, but the guard frightened the party off. The wife is in a critical condition. She may recover, but the little child is dying. The militia hat been asked for, as it is hourly expected that another attempt will be made to force the jail and lynch the men. One of Their Raee. How Frank Templeman Sought to Make $1,000. Pittsburg, May 22.—The interest felt here in cheap fuel Is intensified by the experiments now going on at the establishment of Moorhead & Brother, by which pulverised coal is brought into actual competition by t.e process cootrolle 1 by Brastus Wiman, of New York. It lias been running for a week at these works with remarkable results. It is claimed that 4,600 pounds of iron were drawn in an hour with a charge of 700 pounds of coal, Which is alleged to be .the cheapest run ever made, because the refuse coal whioh is used costs less than fifty cents per ton. Washington, May 83.—Mr. Porter, the superintendent of the census, has discovered that he has a namesake living in Indiana. In fact his attention was ca'led to the matter by tl\e gentleman himself, who wrote to Inform Superintendent Porter that the president evidently intended to appoint him, but that he would waive all claim to the position, prov; "ug that the emoluments of the oflloe were equally divided with him. The Indiana Porter says that he was in the Sixty-ninth Indiana regiment. He mentions this fact and others as a reason for believing that he was the man whom the president intended to have the office of superintendent of census. Here's Trouble. Berlin, May 23.—From certain indications at the rooms of the American delegates, as well as at the quarters of tbe English commissioner* and at the German foreign C fflce, it is evident that there is some serious hitch in the negotiations of the S-imoan commission. Mr. Phelps, who is known as "the peacemaker," both in the conference and in the working committee, is in evident trouble. First he is interviewing an English commissioner in bis own room, then he is hurrying off to the foreign office, where he remains for some time closeted with the Gorman representatives, and then repeating the process.Inspector Byrnes, District Attorney Fellows and Commissioners of Accounts Holahan and Barker were constantly in consultation, and their mysterious movements caused the heart of many a city official to quake. After the first outburst th£ play was allowed to proceed without demonstration until the close of the terrace scene in the second act, when the occupants of the front of the house called Bellew before the curtain. His appearance was the occasion for mingled cheers and hisses, and he precipitately retired. Faint cries of Eva Sothera and Mrs Carter came- from the back of the house. The expected demonstration on the part of members of the Chicago club, to which Mr. Henry E Abbey referred in hi9 Interview in New York, failed to materialize. Lauer lost heavily on the great Brooklyn handicap, and then sunk almost every cent he had in a vain attempt to recoup himself by backing the favorites on the Gravesend track. Luck at Gravesend. THE ALMIGHTY DOLL, America's Demands. The uncertainty as to who the culprit was cleared up, w jen not a city official, but as cunning a rogue as has been run down in many a year, was placed behind the bars at police headquarters. Both the German and English commissioners refuse to talk on the subject, but it is learned from other sources that the United States government has instructed its commissioners to insist upon the return of Malietoa as king.
