The most common, however, it hyperemia, or a rush of blood to the head. The hyperemia- may be acute or chronic, inflammatory, or due to such transient causcs as a dependent position of the bead, violent exercise or emotion, a full meal, or a glass of wine. Its agency may be shown by compression of the carotid artery, which will often relieve the tinnitus. Quinine in excessive doses induces this symptom. One case is reported in which a physician was afflioicd with tinnitus for twenty years. He heard every variety of sounds, even long conversations. Deaf mutes are stated to be frequently troubled with tinnitus. Chronic cases dependent upon chronic inflamation of the middle ear seem to resist all treatment. The aulijecLiuui laUuriy -attracted considerable attention frotn suspicion that the continued administration of quinine endangers the sense of bearing. Tinnitus often depends upon the presence of cerumen or car-wax. Relief can be obtained in such eases by syringing with warm water. » » e nfli jI All tor thct prei.v glrl'sh face, For a hand as wh:Das snow. I dreamed a foolish dream of tore, L0D3. long years S30. Portrait Pahtim.—It is still a disputed point wheter a portrait should be painted so as to be a liberal likeness of the sitter, or that it» should receive an additional expression imparled to it by the artist. Most distinguished painters have endowed their works with a certain character. Titian and Van Dyke always marie gentlemen of their sitters, and Reynolds always painted a soul as wall as a face. Oar own Sully could not dismiss a portrait from his easel without softening the expression of the harsher features of his male sitters, and imparting a new grace when painting those of the other sex. 7 he artist on these occasons does not, bowerer, pretend to render his own conception, but to give the expression of what he conceives be characteristic of the sitter.— Johnson, in reply to a question on the subject, said that the chief excellence of a portrait is in its being like. This we might suppose would be the universal opinion, and yet how many would regard a matter of fact portrait as almost an affront. Few, like Cromwell or William Humboldt, have the independence, or, shall we call it, conscientiousness to be content with being painted precisely as they are. Oar rentiers may remember the positive command of Cromwell to the artist: Taint me as I am—warts and wrinkles as well." The stern DLord Pixrator was obeyed, and we have, in consequence, Samuel Coopers head of Cromwell, one of the best historical portraits. Humboldt, the diplomatist, who was neither good looking nor vain enough to believe himself so, ret'jsed t» «it to Isabey; and when afterwards he saw his portrait in the picture of the Cong .'ess of Vienna, he exclaimed: "I determined to pay nothing for my portrait, and the rogue of a painter has taken his revenge by raakihy it like." The Chinese artists belong to the literal school, and cannot ima . ine how and why an ordinary face should be changed into one of a higher character. Few visitors to Canton in former years have not been told of the reply of a native portrait painter to his American sitter, who intimated that be need not make an exact copy of his iace, bat ratber soften nigged features and a rough skin. "Hi-aw !" exclaimed the astonished Chinaman, "how csu make a hamsdome face, no have got t" Office at his residence on Franklin Bt. opposite the Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre, Pa., whore ho may hereafter be found at all hours. Put the same question to an enamored young gentleman of eighteen, and he will vow that it is the CliquDDt champagne of hitman existence, to wfeiett all subse- ' quent emotions, dignified with the name of lore, are mere Jersey cider. But the both sexes, in nine cases out of ten, oan tell a different story. Boy and girl love is but a faint shadow of the intense passion which often overcomes and enthralls the middle-aged. The capacity fur loving is cot .ally developed in the young miss who has just oast aside her dolls, nor in the youth whose chin is btat newly acquainted with the raxor. The enthusiasm of these novices in the tender passion is generally evanescent; Of course there are exceptional eases, but as a general rule, love does not take firm root in the heart before the age of twenty-five. Every item of bis expenses exceeds that of a married man. Food, rent, clothes, washing, cost him much more. As a question of prudence, there: fore, and still more.as a question of health, and repute, a young man will do well to marry.
