The Workers Will Probably Be Dofeatod in Their struggle—Mr. Chamberlain's Proposed Invasion of Ulster. Tha Government sad the League. London, Aug. 0.—Tha striking engineers and firemen, designated in English railway nomenclature as drivers and stokers, will probably be unsuccessful In their struggle against the Midland railway to compel that corporation'.to reeoind or modify its edict requiring tha wages of their train hands to be i*id at the rato of so much per hour insteud of the per diem compensation they havo hitherto received. The 4,000 men who struck work made a great hole in the (company's most active and neceaagry force of employes, but the craftsmen engaged in tho oontc.it lack the cohesion aqd organization of 5 i ibelr American brethren, .tho Brotherhood of Tiocomotivo Engineers and Firomon, and are at the mercy of the army of "rat" engineers ami machinists that infest* London and whose components live upon tho proceeds of odd Jobs. Those men aro flocking to the assistance of the company in large numbers, anil tho other railways are contributing as many of thoir spare engineer* and firemen as can bo induced to man the Midland's eugines through covert intimations that dismissal will follow refusal, arid their own tomato disregard of the rales of fair play when advantago is to be gained by their violation The Midland railway, in many oases, uses the tracks of other lines, and Its peculiar relations with these companies enable it to call itpou them for assistance with full aanwiivco of its being f orthoomhig, and with these advantage*, together with those derived from the disorganised state of the strikers, the vast number of capable men out of employment, and the mercenary disposition of those who liaVo work, but are ever on the alert to better their condition, at no mat or what cost to others, the railway is ,tC almost sure to win in the end. It is stated in government circles that the negotiations with the Washington government for the cettlcment of the Canadian fisheries dispute aro progressing favorably, and no doubt is entertained that the difference will be speodily and satisfactorily adjusted. Mr. Chamliorlain has announced his intention to Invade Ulster at tha beginning of October, and lias arranged to qieak at Belfast on "the 4th, and hi Cohralue on the 0th of that month. He is, of course, sure to meet with a welcomo reception at both places, but exactly what good can result to the Unionist cause from his visit i* not altogether plain. Nothing that can be said to an Ulster audience will add one vote to the Conservative or Unionist strehgth, or win one from the Home Rule ranks, and unless Mr. Chainberlaia shall have absorbed some new Ideas by tlM time he gets to Belfast he will have nothing The Thistle's Probable Antagonist Makes a Splendid Baee In a Fresh Braese. Chicago, Aug. 6.—The arguments of counsel and judge's charge took up the time until late in tho afternoon in the trial of the boodlors yesterday. AVTion the jury finally retired tho eloven defendants were immediately led to a separate room, and kept under watchful guard. Scarcely any of the spectators left their seats. Ladies sat .in their : seats and fanned themselves, and chattled gayly as between the acta at the play. Judge Jamieson desuended from the bench. The lawyers wtoo have been at swords' points during the trial suddenly became friendly again, ,ani acted wl£, the levity of let out to play. From a solemn court of justice the place was transformed into a booth in Vanity EWr. The prisoners themselves caught the spirit In thoir ante room, with big bailiffs darkening the door, they seemed to be holding an impromptu and uproarious session of the old county board gang. Van Pelt's falsetto voice mingled strangely with the gruff bite of Wren. They all said the epd of the trial was a great relief, no matter what the verdict might be. The sloop Volunteer, although new and untried, this being her maiden race, was tlie favorite In her class, and she won easily. The interest, of oourse, centered in the performance of the Volunteer, and her hosts of admirers wore by no means disappointed, for the way the "new Blngle sticker" showed the other "flyers" her heols proved that she will bo tho wonder of the yachting world. The starting gun was fired at 10:15, and till of the yachts, with the exception of the Oracle, Stranger, Fanny and Concord, got over tho line without a handicap. The Puritan crossed first and led the fleet almost to the "Sow and Pigs." The Volunteer, Mayflower and Atlantic were among the last to start, but they all crept up, and as the Vohmteor made the first turn at the "Sow and Pigs" without having to tack, she got a big lead on the Puritan, the only boat in the fleet leit for hor to pass when the "Sow and Pig" lightship was reached. In the same way the Mayflower caught up with tho Puritan, but was unable to pass her. The Priscilla was left far behind the other three big ones. &AKlHc POWDER Absolutely Pule. Titan ia. Tho boats of chief interest in the schooner class wore the Sachem, the Iriquoi* and the Palmer. The Sachem was the favorite, and she won.
