Arrest. THE EXPECTED "DEMONSTRATION" Erie, Pa., July 15.—Henry George addressed two meetings here Wednesday, lecturing under the auspices of the six Knights of Labor assemblies. He had been liberally advertised, and the workingmeu of tho city made the occasion a general holiday. Of the 5,000 people assembled at the Fort Herman summer resort, four miles east of the city on the lake shore, not 1,000 listened to his brief speech in the afternoon, being drawn off by other attractions on the grounds. Little sympathy was developed, and adverse criticism of the speaker and his views was freely spoken. In the evening he lectured on "Land and Labor" in the Park Opera house, in the eity. His fine address was broken in upon repeatedly by interruptions from tbe meagre audience. There was bandinage about Mc- Glynn, and a stream of questions poured in upon him, but ho held the fort. Before he camo he was very popular, and the strange change of sentiment among the people is unaccountable.SERIOUS AFFRAY GROWING OUT OF Ball game* yesterday: At Boston—Detroit, 7; Boston, 4. The sentenco was tacked on to the end of a scathing address, which brought tears into the eyes of the convicts faithful wife. Judge Barrett told Sharp that he and Kerr and Foshay were thieves as well as bribe givers, and that Sbnrp, with a million in his pocket obtained by theft and bribery, and with no sign of repentance or restitution, had little ground on which to seek for mercy. Paws, July 15.—The fall of the Hostile was commemorated with quiet and decorum. A demonstration was made at the status of Strusburg in tho morning, but it waa entirely of a peaceful nature. There were thousands of Catholics within hearing of his voice who remembered old Jemmie Mc- Glynn, a brother of the Rev. Of The Philadelphia Times by Cashier Mrs. Sharp, dressed in the same sombre clothes that she wore on Wednesday, and wall the largo diamonds flashing in her ears, seated herself by his side. The warden and deputy sheriff got in, and the carriage drove off. Henri Rochefort, Deputies Laisant and Lnguerre and a number of Irrecoucilables attempted to excite a hostile demonstration during the review at Longchampe, but the people around quickly drowned out their voices with cries of "Vive Grevy." Philadelphia, July RD.—Mr. Joseph M. White, who has been cashier of The Times newspaper office for about ten years, is said to be a defaulter to the amount of at least $20,000. An examination of Mr. White's books was made a short time ago, and as a consequence he was adked to tender his resignation, which he did. Since that time the examination has been progressing, and each day the deficit has increased until it now reaches the figure above stated, although the examination of his books is not yet near completed. As Indicated by the books the peculations have been going on for at least nine years, and although suspicion was at various times aroused by the extravagant habits of White, it was dispelled by the statement made by himself that his wife had fallen heir to to quite a large sum of money. It now appears, however, that neither he nor his wife have any property or money beyond White's income from his position, and that the money taicen by him has been squandered iD a lavish way in maintaining a position in society which his salary of $2,500 per year would not warrant. The mood of the crowd, politically, was listless, the only person received with genuine enthusiasm being M. Floquet. Loudon, July 15.—The voice of the Crown Prince Frederick William is now clear, and has almost resumed its normal condition. The prince yesterday visited the Throat ho» pital in Golden square. He was keenly interested in the cases observed, especially in that of an old man who had just been cured, after having been afflicted with a growth similar to that upon the prince's throat A crowd of Germans gathered outside while the prince was in the building, and upon his exit he was enthusiastically cheered. All the counsel for the defense were present except Judge Fullerton. Judge Barrett came to court with his face yellow and drawn from his bilious attack. No steps have as yet been taken by The Timee Publishing compaajr against the defaulter, but it is said that he is now, and has been since his resignation, under police surveillance. He has been at the office assisting the experts in the examination of his aocounts for several days, and the discovery of so large a shortage, which may be consider ably increased by future developments, has caused considerable excitement Late in the day a crowd gathered at the Quai da l'Hotel du Louvre crying ''Vive Boulanger I" They refused to disperse, and were fired upen by the Paris Guard. It ia not known whether any of the crowd were wounded. Judge Nelson made a motion for a new trial, and the motion was denied, and then District Attorney Martine said: "The defendant, Jacob Sharp, has been convicted of bribery, and it now becomes my duty to ask the court to impose sentence. Because of the allegations made regarding Mr. Sharp's health, it became necessary for me to give the court all the information I could on this point" Creditors have attached th» boats of Ittjss and Lee for debt A match is on between Teneyck and Lee for $300 or $500, to be rowed here in September. That the distinguished barrister and former law partner of Abraham Lincoln, should marry at his time of life—he is 61—was not surprising, but when Frank A. Wean, a clerk in his office, asked Marriage License Clerk Salmonson for a pink certificate, and gave his chiefs name as the party of the first part, there was an incredulous titter through the office. However, business was business, and the lady's name was duly asked and giveo as Miss Marie A. H. Decker. She has been Mr. Swett's confidential clerk and bookkeeper for the greater part of the seven years in which she has been in his office. She is a very good looking lady, besides being an accomplished musician, a highly educated woman, a member of one of the best families of Germany, and withal possessed of such business ability that she has had entire charge of the office, and as the younger Mr. Swett says, was "as valuable as any one of the Ann.
