As he was crossing the lawn a few days ago during recess the boys were playing baseball, and a ball thrown by the center ileldbr struck Mr. Pittard in the face, bruising him severely. The boy at once ran forward, begged pardon, and said the occurrence was entirely accidental. The minister, infuriated by the pain, knocked the boy down, stamped on him and dragged him about until the boys united and drove the preachor away. The lad, who was in a terrible condition, was tenderly carried to the dormitory by his fellow students. The minister called to the boys later and upbraided them for not dragging their schoolmate from him sooner, and said be had no idoa what he was doing, that his temper for tho time had crazed him. The boy has just died, and Mr. Pittard has fled. OF TH£ MURDER OF HIS COUSIN, MARY ANDER8ON. Yesterday's ball gamer: At New York— Philadelphia, 5; New York, 4. Albany, June 14—The amendment to the factory law of last year, introduced by IWistnr McMillan, of Buffalo, and signed by Governor HUl on May 85, has occasioned great excitement in labor circles in view of the fact that eight deputy inspectors are created by it. The bill wan inspired by Factory Inspectors Connelly and Franey, who found the 50,000 manufacturing establishments of the state too iniuiy to permit at proper supervision by two men. The law of 1888 prohibited the employment of children under the age of 13 in manufacture Pittsburg, June 14.—For years the Church of the Holy Name, on Troy hill, Allegheny, of which the Itev. Mr. Mollinger has been tho pastor for more than twenty years, has been a place to which tha afflicted of all denominations have m»de pilgrimages. The numberless cures which have been scribed to the intercession cf St. Anthony have caused the fame of the church to spread to every part of the country. Mount Holly, N. J., June 14.—Nearly two hours were occupied by Judge Parker yesterday in his charge to the jury in the Peak murder trial. The charge was satisfactory to both prosecution and defense. There was a rush for the court house at a o'clock, when the ringing of the bell announced that the jury had agreed. Niw Havkn, Conn., June 14.—Offlcera for 1888 were clucted by tho Yale University Baseball club as follows: W. L. Velle, of Molino, Ills., president; S. Y. Otborn, of New Haven, vlco-president; J. J. When the jury came into court he scanned their faces with the nearest approach to anxiety ho has shown during the trial, and what he saw was by no means calculated to reassure him. An unfavorable verdict was as already indicated by the countenance of the jurors as though it had been printed in ink thereon. Peak's father sat next to his •on, but the other members of the family were not present. Yesterday was the feast day of the patron saint. For sevoral days hundreds of the afflicted have boon arriving on trains and in other conveyances to take part in the observance of the day and to appeal to the Baint for rollef frrra their ills. Prom daylight the roads leading to Troy hill were thronged with people in carriages and on foot, hurrying to the church as best they could, so as to got within the auditorium. It was a pathetic sight, but there was not one among the throng who did not seem buoyed up by the thought that relief from bodily Ills was at the summit of the hill overlooking the Allegheny river. It is estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 persons were present for the high mass, which was recited at 10:30 o'clock. The church has a seating capacity of about 1,000, but by 10 o'clbok fully 1,309 were in the building. The members of the congregation attended services earlier in the morning, and during the rest of tho day the church was given up to the strangers and the afflicted. BETWEEN TWO FIRES. Jamestown, O., June 14.—On Saturday, night Peter Betters, a colored man, made a desperate attempt to assault a colored woman, Martha Thomas, aged nearly 75 years. He gained entrance to her log cabin by digging a trench from the outside. A desperate struggle ensued, in which the old woman was terribly injured. The neighborhood was greatly excited, and the fugitive negro was hunted down. In the fair grounds, where the tornado played such fearful havoc some time ago, are many trees bent by the stoi-ra, and making excellent gallows. To one of these the body of Betters was found hanging yesterday. The work was quietly done in the night by the infuriated citizens of Jamestown. It is ste*jel tbe delay in forming a ministry wrs dua the knowledge of the statesmen solicited to eo-oporate in it) constitution that tho cabinet will find itself confronted with the duty of settling the question of a divorce between ICing Milan and Queen Natalie. In viov of the certainty that a decision in favor of tho quoon—the only just one that can be (jlven— will arouse the wrath of the king, while a decree In favor of the king will as sorely offend Russia, the position of the Servliin raj Inst minister at this timo is very like iba* of tiae youthful apple thief ou the fence, with the farmer on the one side and the dog in tbe other. For a moment the silence was awful. All eyes were fixed upon the young defendant, who stood calMly looking at his judges, with one hand lightly resting upon the back of his chair. Not & muscle of his frame quivered nor did he even change color, and pepple looked on with astonishment at the sublime exhibition of nerve. Exeter Borough Ordinance The services lasted from 10 to 1 o'clock and two sermons were preached, in addition to which Father Mollinger made a brief address in English on the life and service* of St. Anthony. A life size statue of the saint occupied a place in the sanctuary. At 3 o'clock vospers and benediction were held in the private chapel of Father Mollinger, which he built with his own means at a cost of 950,000. Of this chapel a writer in the June number of one of the church magazines says: Be it ordained and enacted by the Burgess and Town Council of the Borough of Exeter, la fee county of.Luzerne, 3t»te of Pennsylvania, and It la hereby ordained and enacted by authority of tho same: That Title 11 of the boroufh ordinances shall be amended aa follows, and all other seolioos of title n conflicting with these are hereby repealed: N OLD-FASHIONED FOURTH.* The City Fathers of Buffalo Appropriate •10,000 for a Celebration. Considerable agitation for an "old fashioned Fourth" has been going on lately—a Fourth In which boat races, fireworks, orations, etc., tend to indelibly impress upon the youthful mind the fact that on that day something over a century ago the American eagle first spread its pinions and screamed—and the council yesterday yielded so far to public opinion as to appropriate about $10,000 for the occasion. A regatta will take place in the afternoon, for which (2,000 has been appropriated for prizes. Hon. George R. Wendling has accepted an Invitation to deliver the oration of the day, and other features are liberally provided for. An immense c.owd of strangers is expected. The law also empowers tho factory inspector to divide the state into districts and assign a deputy inspector to each. It was this clause which caused the commotion, as the friends of nearly every prominent man wanted to run him for one of the places, and the result waa that over 400 persons applied. Yesterday seven men visited the secretary of state's room and took tbe oath of office. Their names anl districts are as follows: "On one of the high hills of western Pennsylvania overlooking tho Allegheny river stands an exquisite little chapel, unique, wonderful, costly, magnificent. It was built by a devoted priest out of his own inherited wealth to do honor to the relics of the saints. It would lead like an extract from tho "Arabian Nights" did we venturo a full description of this astonishing work of private devotion. We may safely say there u nothing like it in America. Thousands of precious relics cased in crystal, silver and gold line the walls in Incrustations of carving and gilt from tbe floor to the dome. Light streams from above, and the walls are hidden by actual mosaics of reliquaries in every shape the imagination could picture. Shrines are erected on every side and life size figures of exquisite workmanship of martyred saints lie beneath them, displaying the wounds of their martyrdom to the reverent wonder and devotion of the spectator. Urns and vials centuries olid, some of them containing sacred r«lics taken from the catacombs or the crypts of ancient shriues in the old world, are here all covered with costly plate glass. The precious authentications of these relics, some crumbling with age, are inclosed in the fireproof safes of this wonderful chapel. How these relics were obtained and this account of their accumulations would form a history of itself. When taken back to his cell in the county jail Peak was visited by bis mother and sister and brother. The former threw her arms around Barclay's neck and cried as though ber hi#rt would break. Be that as It may, however, the meeting has added to the prestige of neither gentlemen, and both will be exceedingly luclry to escape Its consequences without loss of influence, for in no country in the world than France can a public man be so quickly and thoroughly crushed by ridicule. Judge Parker said he would adjourn tho court until June 25, when a motion for a new trial will bo made by Peak's counsel.
