THl StOflltt, nil IUTKS, 40., IMPARSItAI.LT D1SKUST A!« PU- Our mothers were old. playmates and first cousins. My first recollection is thatofayoung gentleman in a Turkey red frock and morroceo shoes, rocking t» cradle in which reposed a sunny-haired, blue-eyed baby, not quite a year old. That young man was I, myself, Harry Church,- that blue-eyed baby was Mary Moore. There were four others, inmates of the room, who had risen on my sudden entrance. One was a blue eyed child whom I hifd already soen and who now stood by Frank Chester, clinging to his band. Near by stood iafzie, Mary Moor's oldest sister, and in a distant corner, where she had hurriedly retreated when my name was spoken, stood a tall and slender figure, half hidden by the heavy window curtain that fell to the floor. When the first rapturous greeting was over, Jennie led mo forward with timid grace, and Frank Chester grasped my hand. The sides of it were of pure gold, Che feet of emeralds and rubies intermixed with pearls, each o( which was as large as an otrich's egg. The throne had seven steps; on each side were delineated orchards full of tr«s, the branches of which were of precious stones, representing fruit ripe and unripe; on the tops of trees were to be seen figures of plumage birds, particularly the peacock, the etauh and kurges. All these birds were hollowed within artificially, so as to .occasionally utter melodious sounds, such as the ear of mortal never heard. On the first step were delineated vine branches, having bunches of grapes, composed of precious stones of various kinds, fashioned in such a manner as to represent the various colors of purple, violet, green and as to render the appearancc of real fruit On the second step, on oach side of the throne, were two lioM of terrible aspect large as life, and formed of cast gold Bounty Back Psv, Pensions, and other Government Claims Collected. "The nature of this remarkable throne was such that when Solomon placed his foot on the first s'ep, the birds spread their wings and made a fluttering noise in the air. On his touching the second step, tfce lions expanded their claws. On his reaching the third step, the whole assemblage of demons, air fairies, and men, repeated the praise of the Deity.— When he arrived at the fourth step, voices were heard addressing him in the following manner: 'Son of David, be thankful for the blessings which the Almighty has bestowed upon you.' The same was repeated on his reaching the fiflh step. On his touching the sixth step, all the children of Israel joined them ; and on his arrival on the seventh, all the birds and animals became in motion, and ceased not ontil he had placed himself on the royal scat, when the birds, lions and other animals, by secret springs, discharged a show er of the mast precious perfumes on Solomon after which two of the kurges- descended and placed the golden crown upon his bead. In my hurried visit home of two days, I saw nothing of Mary Moore. She had gone to a boarding school in Massachusetts, and was not expected home until the next fall. One sigh I gave to tho memory of my little blue-eyed playmate, and called myself a man again^ "Before the throne was a column of burnished go Id, on the top of which was a golden dove, which held in its beak a volume bound in silver- boole were written the psams of David; and the dove having presented the book to the king, he read aloud a portion of it to the children of Israel. It is farther related that on the approach of evil persons to the throne, the lions were wont to set up a terrible roaring and to lash their tails with violence; the birds also, and the demons and genii, to utter horrid cries; so for fear of them, no one dared be guilty of falsehood, bat all confessed their crimes. Wilkes-Barre, March IS, 1885. India was my salvation ; not merely because of a plentiful share of gold I had laid up, but because honest labor had counteracted the evil of nature, and made me a better man. And when at the end ot three years I prepared to return, I wrote nothing to the dear ones I was about to meet, of the reformations I knew had taken place. Many years have passed since that happy night, and the hair that was then dark and glossy, is now taming grey. I am growing to be an old man, and I can look back to a long, happy, and well-spent life. And yet, sweet as it has been, I would not recall a single day, for the lore that my manhood so bright shines also upon me, in my white hairs. An old man?' Can this be so? At heart I am as young as ever. And Mary, with her bright hair parted smoothly from a brow that has a slight furrow in it, is still the Mary of my early days. To me she can never grow old or change. Are you, by reason of the care and weariness of the body, which wifehood and motherhood bring, forgetful of, and ungrateful for their comforts and joys? Oh! wife and mother, what if a sudden stroke should smite your husband, and lay him low ? What if your children should be snatched from your arms, and from your bosom? What if there were no true and strong hearts for you to lean upon? What if there "Were no soft little innocents to nestle in your arms, and to love and receive your love? How would it be with jou then? Be patient, kind, dear wife—be unwearying and long suffering, dear mother—for you know not how long you may be with your best and dearest treasures—you know not how long they may tarry with you. Let there be nothing for you to remember which will wring your heart with remorse, if they leave you alone; let there be nothing for them to remember but love and sweetness unuterable, i f you are called to leave them by the way. Be patient, be pitiluV be tepder to tliem all,, for Defith will sooner or later step between them and you. And Oh 1 what would you do if you should be doomed to sit, solitary a\id forsaken, through years and years ? Bo happy as you are, even with all your trials; for, we believe it, tbou wife of a truo and loving husband, there is no lot in life so blessed and heppy as thine.— Georgians Herbert.
