There is often a good deal of talk iu this town and elscwhero about selling liquor under a government license, and thero is a mistaken idea that liguor can be sold tinder a Federal licenso without reference'to State, county, or muuicipal laws upon the subject Now tho fact is, that tho United States government does not grant licenso for the retail or salo of liquors or anything elso. It levies a special tax upon certain brandies of business, such as tho liquor trade, tobacco manufacture, etc., and imposes a penalty for non-payment, but it gives no licenso or authority whatever to Bell these articles. That is a matter left entirely with the State and municipal authorities, and anyono attempting to sell intoxicating liquors under what he supposes to be a " Government licenso," is liable to prosecution and tino under the local laws of tho State or municipal government.
