The health of many adults is undermined by exposure during the war, the youth are being brought up in ignorance, and are imbibing all the malignant passions, and smothered vengeance of their conquered but haughty and relentless parents— retaining all their notions of caste, and belief in the degrading eSects of labor, without the power to extract their support from the sweat of their servants' brows. I can see no hope for the South, but by a sufficient admixture of the northern element, to entirely revolutionize public sentiments, morals, politics, and the whole social and industrial fabric—they being as low in their standard of morals as their worst enemies have charged, profanity, intemperance, and all the impure vices seem* ing to be indigenous toSouthern society; and what else could be expected, each man being a petty tyrant, living in idleness, having unbridled sway over soul and body of hundreds of fellow beings, some of whom I know to have been more intellectual, and nearly as white aa their masters or mistresses. The freedmen are aa a class much more intelligent and thrifty than they have credit of being, many of them being mechanics of no mean pretensions, and now plying their trades, charging their ignorant former masters good wages for thoir labor, and giving the northern men the preference in all cases, circumstances move the Indians, at a cost of U0,000,00c having paid Spain 120,000,000 far her, anc then expended ten to fifteen milfKns more io • navy yafd, dredging her rfvert, protecting her ports, and building forts and Arsenals, in 1801 she had but about 80 OOfl white inhabitants, with, I think, some 60,000 slaves though my memory is at fault a* to thC latter number, and I have no library to refei to | I presume the population whit* and black has decreased one-fourth. ROBERT BAUR, Main Street, 2d door below the Square. -Wilkes-Barre, March 16, 1805. " Wo had rather an uneventful voyage after embarking at New York. After a three days voyage we reached Savannah. We then transported Our baggage to a Florida boat and having a few hours time before her departure, took a carriage and drove through the principal streets of the city, which presented anything but a thrifty appearance—the buildinga with a few exceptions, are quite common, and all look dusty, moss-grown and dilapidated.— Many of the best dwellings are surrounded with high brick walls, giving them a prisonlike appearance; the streets are very wide and most of them have a double row of trees on each side, but being very sandy and unpaved, except one, the "Broadway" of tbe city, they were extremely unpleasant, it being very dry and windy enough to whirl the sand into our faces. Wo arrived at Jacksonville, on Sunday, about 10 o'clock, x. m. and made our way on foot to the nearest hotel hiring a mule cart (a Florida coach) to "tote" our baggage up. We staid at this tbe "St. Johns Hotel" until Monday, occupying small rooms with large flocks of mosquitoes. We then moved into our rented house, which we furnished with as much economy as was consistent with comfort, and you have no idea "how few are our real wants, and how easily supplied." I can see no hope for the South, but by a sufficient admixture of the northern element, to entirely revolutionize public sentiments, morals, politics, and the whole social and industrial fabric—they being as low in their standard of morals as their worst enemies have charged, profanity, intemperance, and all the impure vices seem* ing to be indigenous toSouthern society; and what else could be expected, each man being a petty tyrant, living in idleness, having unbridled sway over soul and body of hundreds of fellow beings, some of whom I know to have been more intellectual, and nearly as white aa their masters or mistresses. We then moved into our rented house, which we furnished with as much economy as was consistent with comfort, and you have no idea "how few are our real wants, and how easily supplied." SPJERUNG, We all kept quite welt while boarding, but Mrs. L. was quite weak and exhausted by seasickness, and was quite sick for a day or two after getting in our house, but has recovered all she lost, and now is better than for a long time paat. I have gained much strength, and have much less irritation and congestion of the throat I can walk, ride, and otherwise exercise all day without laying down to rest, and have a good appetite ; I can take a good sized axe and swing it over my head, and chop wood for half an hour »t a time, and saw for an hour, without stopping, and practice at tbat when the weather is unsafe to go tar from home. The climate is unsurpassed by that of any other country on the globe, for mildness and the various qualities essential to an invalid, being agreeable, serene, and in consequence of the constant trade winds, much less enervating than I had expected. We had but one or two cloudy days during the first five weeks we were hero, and the last week baa been half sunshine, though in the rainy season—we have had two nighU cold enough to make ice, and about half a dozen white frosts, but I now have peas, beela, turnips, and radishes growing from seed planted ginoe we hare become sottled. We burn wood, and it aeems quite like boyhood daya to ait down by a biasing fire on the uearth surrounded by a large pine knot, which filla the room with light so strong, tbat a large oil lamp Is quite eclipsed. We have a daily mail, or ahould have, but it averages bat about three times a week, by which we get N. Y. papers about one week after date, and all tbe magazines ; I miss my books, but probably it ia best tbat I have less to read, and more time to exerciae.
