Jan. 3. A Puzzle.—Here is n question for algebraists and others, who like to erack an arithmetical nut now and then, to try their wits upon. Two Arabs had get down to dinner, and were accoatad by a stranger, who requested to join their party saying that as he could not get provisions to bay in that country, if they would admit bim to eat only an equal share with themselves he would willingly pay for th6 whole. The frugal meal consisted of eight small loaves of bread, five of which belonged to one of the Arabs and three to tho other. The stranger having eaten a third part of tho eight loaves, arose and laid before them eight peices of money, saying: "My friends, there- is what I promised to give, divide it between you cording to your just right." A dispute at once arose respecting a division of the money; but reference being made to the cadi, he adjudged seven peices of money to tho owner of the five loaves, and only one piece to hinD who had the three loaves. And yet the cadi decided Justly. * -■ Pittston, July 12—11'. JOB PRINTING, (JOHN W. HUGHES' ESTATE.) H. It appears that about a year ago. Clarion H. Kimball, formerly a Lieutenant in the 18th New-"Hampshire Volunteer*, and later a detective under Gen. Baker at Washington, obtained a situation with Jameson, Cotting & Co., wholesale dry goods dealers'in St Louis. Ilia duties led him, last summer, to Jacksonville 111., where ho made sho acquaintance of Lucy Chillen, a young lady attending school jn that place. The attractions of Lucy often called him out of his line of travel—his collections became meagre, his account overdrawn, and finally the last of last month he so overstayed his time as to awaken serious apprehensions in the rniuds of his employers, who examined his account, ■tid arrived at the conclusion that he was a doiaulter in tho sum of $2000. The matter was placed in tho hands of the police who learned that Kimble had married Miss Chalten at.the residence of her parents at Springfield, III., and started on a wedding tour to the East Ah officer followed in bis track, which was missed once or twioe, but finally discovered the young man and his bride at his father's hauBc, about ten miles from Concord, N.II. Having fitted up my Saloon, opposite the office of the Pennsylvania Coal Company, in comfortable and inviting style, I am prepared at all times to furnish customers with For hours and hours they toiled along, the fond woman inspiring the husband, refusing to leave him. All day and night they buffeted the angry currents, till at last human nature gave way, and the white man gave up the ghost. Still clinging to tbo cold clay, the widow toiled on, till at last, becoming insen•ible, her efforts relsxed, and she knew no more until she found herself, resuscitated by some friendly hands, and, on inquiry, found that a favoring current had drifted her upon an island, where she had been discovered and brought to life by her deliverers. Another instance, scarcely less remarkablo, occurred during the period of thy visit to Honolula. At the time there was a large number of whaling vessels in port, many of which were short of men, and consequently sailors' wages were very high, and large advances were given to any Kanakas who would ship. One ship, in particular, had lost the whole of one watch by desertion,' had finally succeeded in obtaining her complement. Tho men, all Kanakas, received their #100 each as an advance, and went on board, and the ship got under woigh. All went on very well for the first day and night, and the captain was congratulating himself on-his good luck. During the middle watch, of the second night, however, stepping out on deck, the captain was astonished on finding no ono about, and asking the man at the wheel what it meant, was told htj didn't know what had become of tho people, but presumed they had gone below. Jan. HUGHES' ESTATE.) A large native canoe, haring on board a number of natives, left one of the southern islands, bound to the northward. When only a part of the way across the Ohjhee passage, wjjere there is always a heavy cross sea and furious currents, a squall struck and capsized her.— Among the passenger* was a native woman, the daughter of a chief, with her husband, a white man ; the others being all Kanakas, they of course struck out for themlseves toward shore, a distance of thirty miles ; but the white man could not swim, and his truehearted wife, directing fiim to put his arm upon her shoulder, struck out for tho nearest land. Sole Leather and Shoe Finding* of all A HoKiwosk Rudely Disturbed.—t?e Warn from the St. Loais Dispatch that the wedding tour of a dry goods clerk in that city latoly met with an unpleasant termination near Concord, N. H. Their dream of was suddenly broken, and tho* erring clerk returned to the West without his bride, ai.d with the prospect of a residence in jail at his journey's end.t-Boaton journal. Tit? Calling the mate, and mustering, the crew, he foumj to his consternation that every Kanaka had disappeared.
