JOHNSON AND BAYMOND, dow McClintock died from tbe cffect»of burns received while kindling a Are with crudc oil. At this time, the average'daily incomo from the land interest of the farm was $2,000 and by her will the property, with all her possessions in money, was left, without reserva- to her adopted son, John W. Steele, then about twenty years of age. In the iron safe where the old lady kept her .money, was found $180,000, two-thirds of the amount in green-backs and the balance in gold. Mr. McClintock was hardly cold ir. her coffin before young Steel, who appears to have had nothing vicious in his composition, was surrounded by a set ot vampyrcs, who clung to him as long as he had a dollar remaining.— The young millionaire's head was evidently turned by his good fortune, as has been that of many an older man who made his " pile in oil," and he was ot the impression that his money would accumulate too rapidly unless it was actually thrown away, and throw it away he did. Many of stories concerning hiis career in New liork and Philadelphia savor stuengly of fiction, and would not be credited, were they not so well authenticated. Wine, women, horses, faro, and general debauchery Soon made a wreck $f that princely fortuno, and in twenty months Jo'-nny Steele sqandered two millions of dollars. Hon. Jno. Morrisscy/M. The ptr son most brazen and chiefly instrumental in bringing about the present condition of affairs, was the notorious Seth Slocum, who hung around this city several weeks last summer He was worth at ono time over $100,000, which he had "captivated " from Steel, and laid aside for a rainy day, but when the lat— ter's money vanished this amount soon took unto itself wings, and he is at present known among his old associates as a "dead beat." At last accounts, Slocum was incarcerated in the jail of a neighboring county for various breaches of the peace, jrnd was unable to obtain bail in the sum of $500. Tho longer they livo the more difficult the acquisition of good language will be; and if the golden age of youth, the proper season for tho acquisition of language, be passed in its abuse, tho unfortunate victim of neglected education is very probably doomed to talk slang for life. Money is not necessary to procure this education. Every man has it in his power. He has merely to use the language which he reads instead ot the slang which he hears; to reform his taste from the best speakers and poets of tho country ; to treasure up choice phrases in bis memory and habituate himseK to their use avoiding at the same time that pedantic precision and bombast which show rather the weakness of a vain ambition than tho polish of an educated mind. » (Under H. Early in lgfs, the Van Slyke well on this farm, was struck, and flowed for some time at the rate of 2,500 barrels per day, and several wells yielding from 20ft to 800 barrels were struck at subsequent periods. Besides these, there were many smaller wells, and the territory, j though sadly mismanaged, is still regarded as . among 4hs*est in the region. In 18jj*f ' bowels of the earth obtain increased activity. At that time it is observed by miners that water falls from places where none is observable during the day. The volume in the wheal it perceptibly increased, the atmosphere is charged with gasscs which often prevent the lights from burning, and small particles of earth and rock are observed to fall from the tops of the drives. WARNER, JOB PRINTING,* SALOON AND RESTAURANT, The members listened with frown and laugh — Correct Speaking.—We advise all yonug people to acquire in early life the habit of using good language, both in speaking and writing, and to ahadnon as early as possiblo the use of slang words and phraei.
