Stuart ot Philadelphia—the President of the Christian Commission during the war. He was most enthusiastically received, and spoke with great animation, often telling anecdotes and incidents connected with our war. Here I also met my old friend and brother, the Rev. Robert J. Parvin, whom you have heard In Wilkes-Barre. He has come over as a delegate or agent from the "Freedman's Aid Society," and is to preach that cause to the friends in England. He made a short address at the Bible Society. Mr. Stuart represented the American Bible Society. There seemed to be the best of feeling towards America, and the interest of these two great christian nations in united efforts for the weltare of the world manifested through these great institutions, was taken as an earnest of continued and unbroken peace. Mr. Stuart, Mr. Parvin, and myself paid a visit to Bishop Smith, late Bishop of Victoria In China, where he had had much intercourse with our missionaries. We were very hospitably entertained, and spent two pleasant hours in talking about mutual American friends. The Bishop spoke of his own visit to America with great pleasure. I have attended similar meetings in New York, though not a few years immediately past I had formed my plans of travel so as to reach London at this time, and was enabled under God's good providence to accomplish it I had hoped much from these exercises, as a help to me in understanding something more of the state of the tfiristian world, and as a spur to my OWn future efforts in the Lord's work. It is rather the general spirit of the meetings that I wish to remark upon. It was impossible to attend them all, as on some days there were two or three, held at different places. On some occasions, sermons were preached, 011 others there was a breakfast at which the members of a society with their friends would gather. After the breakfast the company would Join in singing a hymn ; some one who bad been previously appointed, would make an address—perhaps read a written one and then the whole would be closed with prayer. I attended one such, of the Church Missionary Society. Othor societies, had what they called an evening soiree — where a company of ladies and gentlemen met for tea, and then went to a public meeting in the same building. But the most common form was the public meeting at Exeter or St. James' Hall. 1 attended at the former place on four or five occasions, and at the latter twice. The principle societies holding their anniversaries at the former w-re—the "Church Missionary Society," the British and Foreign Bible Society," the "London Jews Society," and the "Ragged School Union." On several of these occasions Lord Shaftsbury presided.— All these institutions showed progress in the great work with generally a gratifying state of the Treasury. I might occupy a single ; letter with an abstract of a single report, but this would take too much time, and would not be generally interesting. All are admitt- j ed by ticket. It seemed at first a singular j mode, as I did not suppose that there would | be any danger of a crowd. But it is the fin- ; glish mode of doing things, aa it seemed very j orderly. The ladies generally occupy the . great body of the hall, with now and then a gentleman among them. The doors are open an hour or more before the time of the meeting. Many ladies bring their work with them, j and as I cast my eye over the audience, I saw some knitting, some sewing, and others with different kinds of ornametal work. I noticed the gentlemen brought something else with them, via: their luncheon, and many an one would pull out his sandwich as it drew to- j wards noon, and thus they could listen with- , out feeling a desire that the speaker would be done. Sometimes there would be some cfranges^Lcrackers on a stand near the speakers with which they could refresh themselves after their speeches. 1 "Dis morning I was drinkin' lager m!t mini friend*, all the wile in mine saloon, and il gomes a young man—py dun, he was suet another nice young man wot dere never vsi already—and he pulls out a liitle sheepskii book and a lead pencil, ami he says he pes local editor, and he wants me lo tell hiin al wot dere w«s pout to row init mine peer salooi SOMETHING NEW. rpHK midersijfneU bavo opened in connection with X their liry Oqow and Grocery Htore, a LAW t McMILLAX. Also, The most crowded meeting ra that of the "Ragged School Union." Every part of Exeter hall seemed to be densely packed. Mr. Stewart made an excellent speech on this occasion on the work done by Sunday schools in America. At St. James' Hall. I attended two meetings. The "Society for promoting christian knowledge," on which occasion the Arohbishop of Canterbury presided, who made a short add ran; and the "Pastoral Aid Society." These were both connected with the church of England, and were not no well attended as the meeting in Exeter Hall. At a meeting at the "Evangelical Alliance," 1 heard a very fine speech from Rev. Dr. Cummins, the great writer on prophucy. At the Bible Society I heard the Hon. and Rev. Baptist W. Noel. At the Grand Fenian pic-nic near Chicago, on the 16th ult, Gen, O'Neill, the Fenian commander at Fort Erie and the victory of Limestone Ridge, was present and made a Hliiring speech. He said that he did not know why he should be called upon to apeak except that his countrymen thought that, as be was brave enough to go to Canada, he would be bold enough to stand up before them and make a speech. The cause of Fenianism was a great and glorious one. It must be so when the Governor of the State, Gen. Logan, and Speaker Colfax had expressed their sympathy with the order. The cause which those men were willing to advocate was that of human liberty for all men, black and while, who had been made after the image of God He was willing to lay down his life at any lime to secure the victory of those princip les. He knew Abolitionism was not a popular theme with bis couutrymen, because it had been denounced by a party who would deceive and sell them, and traffic in their votes and patriotism, yet would not aid the men who struck for Irish Independence. But it was beginning to be popular even jritb his own countrymen, and * treacherous party would hold them bound to them no longer. What others, and among them the President, had said of their friendship to the Irish was false. He bad broken bis pledges to them. The speaker's friends at Nashville had urged him not to assail the President, claiming that he was a friend to the Fenians; but though he had never before voted, he intended hereafter to vote for the party and the men who by their deeds and not words bad shown their sympathy for Irishmen. Theg had been deceived often, enough. President Johnson bad canvassed Tennessee against the Know-Nothings, but that was merely to become Governor. He did not love Irishmen. Of late, that man construed the neutrality laws in such a manner as to ruin their hopes, while if he bad given tbem a fair chance they must have bean successful Many men did not believe they oould put 10,000 soldiers into Canada, but if it had not bean for the great vigilance of the President and his subordinates, '200,000 men would have been there, and they would in a month 31HB STAFF OF LIFE is good Eread, and I would respectfully inform the citiaens of ttstoa and vicinity, that I always keep the genuine article on hand tor sale, with all kinds • MINERS' LAMPS, And every other article belonging to a first class Shop.
